5 degree starting...No Problem!!
Last Tuesday, 11-20, it was 7 degrees with snow and Wednesday, 11-21, 5 degrees with snow in Brodas, MT. One cycle of the switch and she started right up both days! No romp-romp, just the normal idle. Prior to the trip I changed my GPR and switched to Rotella synthetic. I did use a mix of 8oz 2 stroke oil and 8oz Power Service white bottle per tank when I expected the temp to drop below freezing. This was the coldest weather I have had to deal with using a diesel. I was worried about starting in cold weather but I followed the advice given by several of the 'old diesel hands' here on the board and had no trouble. Thanks guys!!! This is a great place to share info and help each other out.
I installed my DP Tuner 3 days before the trip and using the 80 hp econo mode it was a pleasure to drive!! Very responsive and quicker shifts, MUCH better than the Superchip tuner I was using. We drove about 3-5 mph above the posted limit which is not the best for good mpg but still managed to average over 16 mpg for the entire trip. The best two tanks were 19.2 and 18.8 mpg. Blasting across South Dakota at close to 80 mph really hurts milage...
I got the following tunes, 'stock, 60hp tow, 80hp econo'. The 80hp econo has enough 'get up and go' for me as I'm not going to go racing with my truck. I talked to Jody about towing and driving and what I expected from a tuner and we decided on these.
