OK, I just returned to Seattle from a quick trip to my home in Montana, I drove my 2004 F350 CC 6.0 02/04 build date with 04 engine. The truck is stock, except I have disconected the EGR and also disconected the throttle plate, miles on truck 17,000. This is the 5th trip to Montana in this truck and by far the best MPG I have ever had, it avg 19.5 mpg hand calculated. This trip is all on I90 going over several high passes and traveling at speeds between 75 and 80 mph. At each fill up I fill the tank until the fuel, not foam, is spilling out the neck. This trip was empty with no trailer, I have never seen this good mpg on my 02 7.3, I also never got this good mpg on this truck until i disconected the egr and throttle plate.
I think this engine and auto tranny are the best, I believe that after these engines break in the MPG's go up and possibly a little help from the loss of the EGR and Throttle plate.
Speed and rpms have a LARGE impact on mpg....
on my return trip from Memphis a few weeks ago I slowed to 70 mph and got 20.6 hand calculated !!!!!!!!! 21.5 on the overhead lie-o-meter !!!
I had my truck in for service and they reprogramed my pcm. I was getting around 16-17 mpg with my previous flash. After the re-flash my truck as terrible perfomance, and I am now only getting about 13 mpg. Is there anything that I can do to get back to where I was? Loosing 4 - 5 mpg and lots of power is really agrivating me.
Yes, must have had a pre Oct 03 flash in there... that one really hurt our fuelage....
I got the diablo predator to help and obviously it has..
I also attribute some of it to the new Rancho 9000x shocks I got that I set on the softest setting and then pumped my tires up to about 65 lbs or more...
but mostly it is that I now have about 40K on my truck and it's starting to "break in"
DAAAAng...I just can't make it happen. Started at virtually brand new zero miles dead stock 12.5 MPG city.
If I had a Predator - It would never have been off 65 H.P. setting
Unplugged EGR...oops I mean the EGR plug accidently came loose
Covered 8' bed
Changed to syn oil @ 10,000 miles
Diligently trying to keep right foot off the go-fast pad
Now @ 11,600 miles and city MPG has jumped to a wauping 13.2 MPG.
Now I'm really not complaining relative to big dog beast of a truck, 8,000 lbs, 4x4, blah, blah, blah...it's just that my '02 4x4 5.4 gasser got 13.7 - 14.0 and a whole bunch of you's guys are getting better as my hywy miles are only 16.5 mpg on a good day.
Again, not complaining...just an observation cause this is one awsome truck.
That's some great mpg. Don't know what you are doing differently than I do. But I only get 13-14 city and 16-17 highway. That's empty with a 04, 350, CC 4x4, auto, shortbed with 3.73 gears. And I drive 5-10 over speed limit without jumping on it. Thats also hand calculated. I love this truck. It's better than my 99 7.3L. But would like to see those mpg figures out of mine.
Again.... how many miles on yours ? it will settle in to a better number I bet...
mine was consistently right at 16 mpg around town... then the reflash... 13 mpg... then the predator and some miles and now back to 16 or 17 around town....
And I use my remote starter EVERY time I start the truck... so there's a lot of idle time in there....
but on the road, I have always gone too fast to really get anything better than 18 until this last trip... i reset it when fueled up in Memphis and cruised @ about 70 with a few burst to get away from tailgaters my X seems to attract... and when I got as far as Texarkana for the first potty break she needed, the overhead said 21.5 !!!! real mpg = 20.6
I've got 7500 on mine now. about half of those miles are pulling a 8000lb trailer. It's starting to get colder here in ohio yestersay it was 32 in the morning. so they probally started using winter fuel at the pumps. On my last truck the mpg always dropped in the colder months. Everyone says the mpg gets better after the motor breaks in, but on my 7.3L the milage actually went down about 1-2 mpg. I put 80,000 on that motor.
For JD...Since this is my first winter with a diesel does our area bother to switch to winter fuel? If not I wonder where the winter fuel geographic border is?
Well, I've had the truck experience all types of driving now - open road, downtown heavy traffic, around-town traffic, etc. It's only got 2500 miles on it (which means I'm WAY behind on my driving time...), but I'm noticing that it seems to be very consistent around-town at 15-15.7 MPG. Occasionally, if I'm strictly going to and from work in heavy traffic, it drops to about 13 MPG. On the road, headig across state on I-90, I get 17.3 MPG - all these figures are unloaded.
While I'm not completely disappointed, I'm not hugely excited, either. I'm hoping that as I get some miles on her, and break her in, the MPG will increase a bit. I also figure on adding a programmer of some kind which might give me a slight MPG boost, along with the obligatory power boost.
Either way, the truck is outstanding in all other areas and is a true joy to drive.
I have an '05 e-350 with a work body and I would love to see the mileage you all are talking about. I only have 800 miles on it though, and do not know what i will get.I drive all day in the city, and one reason I bought the diesel is that I spend between 500 to 1000 bucks a month on gas in the summer time. I did get the interior and exterior upgrade packages and it is the nicest work truck I have seen, so I won't be too upset with lower mileage. The truck probably wieghs 8000 plus pounds, so I guess that comes at a price. By the way, rocknut it is still 88 to 90 degrees here in new orleans everyday this week.

Up in the panhandle I have seen #1 diesel but down here in south texas I have never seen it.
Well just went over 10,000 on odometer and got just a hair over 19mpg on a 1700 mile round trip from Michigan to Connecticut and back. My biggest complaint was price of diesel in CT - 1.539 per gallon. OUCH!

I wish I could buy diesel for 1.53 a gallon. When did ya see that price??
