I know there is a thread similar to this just below, but I did not want to hi-jack it. Plus I don't believe our systems are the same
Engine is a 4.9L 300 in an 88 F-150. I can not pull the codes off of the PCM. I do not have a code reader, so I use the light bulb way. I have done this several time before and know how it works. But now when I hook it up, the light will come on and then it will go out when I turn the key to the on position and will never flash or come on again until I turn the key back off.
What might have gotten blown?? And how can I check it?
Why do you want to download the codes? Do you have a serious no start condition? That may point to a major power or grounding problem to the EEC if that's the case, which could kill it, and it not be able to send any codes.

Well I was having some problem with the engine running very poorly. I think I might have fixed that. As for the codes though, I tried to pull them and when I couldn't, I figured something was bad somewhere. I am kinda leaning toward a wire has gone to ground somewhere. Just was wanting to fix it if it was nothing to detailed.
Here is an interesting one for ya too. when I disconnect the negative side of the battery and turn the key to "on" the check engine light will come on. Not fully bright, but more than just a dim burn too. Pretty cool huh lol. This is why I am thinking something has gone to ground.
P.S. I tried hooking it up as per that link you gave me and no go on it too. It did have some handy check points on it though. I will definatly give them a test. Thanks!!
Look over there at the battery neg terminal. See if it has a small wire coming off the bat neg cable, and going over to a ground point for the computer. Some trucks had a connector in this wire that corrodes.
