How can I tell once and for all what engine I have? I'm not real familiar with the Ford truck I6.
I have deceided to sell the one I have (in van running now)and install my 302 from my parts van.
I'm in Florida on the east coast if anyone is interested before I run a classified ad.
Thanks!!! Rick
Tell us what year is the truck with the I6? Chances are it is a 300 cid because the 240 was not used after sometime, I think (someone here will know the exact date), in the mid 70s.
INLINE SIX POWER!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!
The VAN is a 1970 Econoline 300, I hac heard that somewhere around there is when Ford offered BOTH engines for a while, I'd hate to advertise/sell this engine to someone as the wrong displacement.
This engine seems to pull the 1 ton van pretty good, better I think than something with only 240 cubes would.
Are there any part numbers that I could use to varify???
The engine character in the VIN number would tell you and if you call a Ford dealer parts counter, they should be able to decode it for you. I can look in my Chilton manual and see what it says, but won't be back until Monday.
Meanwhile, here is a really wacky idea , I guess, but it may work(I'd call the Ford dealer first). I think both engines have the same bore, but the 300 has a 4" stroke, whereas the 240 has a 3.2" stroke. So, what if you pulled a spark plug and stood a long plastic or wooden rod through the hole and hand turned the engine and observe how much the stick goes up and down? Now on a pickup truck this would be easy, but on a van it could be more trouble than it is worth.

OK. My Chilton manual for '65-'86 Ford PICKUPS says that the eighth digit of the VIN for a 240 I6 is going to be an "A" for a '70-72 pickup. According to the "Illustrated Buyer's Guide, Ford Pickup Trucks," (which deals with vans some also), says of the 1968-1972 Econoline van, "Engine choices included two six cylinders, at 170 ci and 240 ci, and Ford's 302 V-8."
