Since smoke is the result of overfueling, all you have to do is overfuel the engine. Its not economical or very good for the engine though, so a pyro is recomended if you decide to turn up the fuel scew to prevent damage.
smoke = wasted money! in both fuel costs and repair costs. 1300 degrees is the highest you realy want your EGT (exhaust gas temperature) to reach. too high of an EGT melts down your engine-pistons and valves. 1/8 to 1/4 turn on your fuel screw is the rule of thumb for the 7.3L turbo motors, so i'd say no more than 1/8 turn for the non-turbo. search the forums for the instruction for fuel screw adjustments. its not hard. let me know if you cant find them. i can explain it.
This is the best site I have found for good info on turning up your fuel. I'm using several of his tricks myself. The next one to be done is the homemade propane injection. Good luck and happy trucking.

Not to mention turning off the general public to "those dirty polluting diesels". Just what we need is to increase the chances of more regulation sooner...
my truck puts out a decent amount of black smoke when i floor it and sometimes a little hear and there also, how much should i turn the pump down?
the previous owner said he had it turned up a little before i bought it, now my EGTs never really get above 800, im just trying to get better mileage out of my fuel.
1300 degrees is 50 degrees above the point your pistons start to melt.
Hypereutectic aluminum starts to melt at 1250, so if you like your pistons, keep it under 1200 with the thermocouple in the exhaust manifold.
