Ok...fairly new diesel owner and new (to me) truck. Have a question. I have 200k miles and the only mod is the 6637 intake.
I am happy with the power, can really feel the boost kick in when it hits 15-18 psi. So...this weekend I put a trailer behind it. Just a simple trailer with 2 ATVs (maybe 3,000 total...probably more like 2,000) Anyway, when going downhill or on a flat grade I could keep 70 mph with no problem. However, when going up any grade (I live in a flat area...not in the mountains) it has trouble keeping up. Let me explain more.
The engine sounds reasonably quiet most of the time...have a intermitten rattle (louder than normal rattle) under load when in the 1500-2000 RPM range. Doesn't do it at full throttle, doesn't do it at idle...but does it everywhere in between. When towing and hit a grade...truck stays in over drive, sounds like my old gasser with very bad gas (the intermittent rattle comes back) and just feel sluggish. Almost like an engine miss....not hardly bad enough to make me think tranny slippage. If I give it more and more juice (to hit 8-10 psi boost) it (barely) keeps the speed and does not downshift....but I thought it shouldn't be so hard to do so.
Do I have a problem? Is this fairly normal? I have a feeling that with any sort of 'real' towing load I would have real issues getting up a simple grade at 60-70 mph.
Been colder here last few days. Maybe 25 F each morning. I haven't yet plugged in the block heater. Leaving for duck hunting I crank the rig while getting the dog ready etc. Cranks right up and idles normally. But, I notice after about 5 minutes....it increases idle to maybe 1200 or so.
I know that DP has a 'high idle' tune. It seems like my truck is doing this on its own. Is it sensing a cold engine and trying to heat up? What else would cause this?

THANKS!
The is normal in colder temps. Mine will rev to about 1000 RPM and sould like a jet engine out the exhaust. Its because the EBPV is closed to help the engine heat faster. The EBPV should open if you touch the brakes.
Mine does exactly the same as yours. A little rattle when going up hill (no kick down into a lower gear). and 1100 rpm idle when warming up. When I touch the brake it kicks down to 750 rpm. I have 199k miles and its an '02. I have no boost guage, but I think my rattle may be from a 1/4 inch leak (black strip on up pipe).
I am new to this diesel and was interested to hear you had the same sounds. I was never in a diesel pickup before so I had nothing to compare the sounds to.
Schmuly
Yeah....honestly, I have 2 sounds. One is the intermittent pinging (like my old gasser) and one sound like an exhaust leak but I haven't noticed anything on the up/down pipes to suggest an exhaust leak.
the idle speed depends on the temps..about 30* temp mine will idle up to 950.. 25* temp will idle at 1000 below 0 will idle up to 1200..at the same time the EBPV closes... touching the brake peddle deactivates high idle and EBPV..it will do this each time you park it for a couple minutes until the truck reaches N.O.T...
Thanks for the idle information guys. I accidently posted that as a reply to another un-related message. I think it has been sufficiently answered however.
