Block heater

How many watts does it take to run the block heater? I plan on getting a 14 gage 50 ft cord and a timer. I need to know how many watts for the timer?

I think it's about 1000 watts, which requires as much as 10 amps depending on the voltage drop of your 50' extension cord.

Just a tip for you, when you are buying the extension cord I recommend the bumble bee or similar with a light up end. It is nice to look out the window and know it is on. I just used the highest rated timer at Farm and Fleet. Idk what the load rating is anymore.

Make sure the timer is a heavy duty timer (~15 amps) and also get the extension cord that is for freezing weather, otherwise the extension cord will crack. I got the Blue outside extension cord that is safe for freezing weather. Also it has an LED on the plug end to show it is powered on. It's useful if its on a timer and lets you know thats its powered up.

Thanks guys, I will make sure the timer can handle 15 amps and 1500 watts at least. The plug with the light is a good idea!!

Generally, the cords are a lot better cords when they are light up too. Like Kawika said, they will handle the cold better. Idk that mine said 'cold rated' or anything like that, but it is plenty flexible etc.
