[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jan-02 AT 10:13 AM (EST)]I completly rebuilt my 4.9L. It is completly stock and so is the truck. Timing set correctly etc, no vac leaks runs fine. I thought I would get a little more performance. I am thinking about changing it out to a V8. It is going to be a daily driver and I am goin to pull a 8/10 trailer once a month. What really should I expect from this 4.9. Thanks
Its hard to beat the 4.9L as far as towing & hauling goes . The key to getting the most out of the engine is the correct rear axle gearing . Most are 3.08 which is fine for mileage & light towing , but it leaves a lot to be desired if you have to tow up hills etc . Even going to 3.55 or 3.73 makes a difference .
if you are thinking about putting a 302 in the truck, I have a feeling that you will be dissapointed. the 300 will out pull a 302 any day of the week. although the 302 makes excellent high rpm power, it doesn't have the low end torque of a 300.
when push comes to shove, the 300 will get down and work like a mule.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jan-02 AT 07:49 PM (EST)]Thanks for the replys. I think is is all in my head. My other truck is an SUV with a 5.9L I think that is my problem. On the 300 I have new carb, complete overhaul of the eng, new cam (stock)30 over bore, Valve job, new Pistons, everthing is new. MSD 6a check my gallery
I swapped out a six in a my 85f150 to a 302.BIG MISTAKE.
the eight is smoother on the highway, but the six is a puller.
as stated, the six is a mule. the axle ratio is something to consider.
I agree i have a 96 150 4x4 300 and a older 302 truck. The gears are the key my 300 has 4.56 witch is the lowest u can fit in a d44 it pulls like a tractor no stoping it
There's alot of thing to do to that 300. 4bbl intake, header or the cast-iron manifolds off a 1987+ EFI 300, Igniton like you hav, 270* cam or more if your brave and straight timing gears like Cloyes, and rollor rockers and even porting & polishing the head.
