'81 F100 w/300L6...stock ignition. What is the output voltage of a stock DuraSparkII coil? I believe my coil output is getting weak and would like to try a better coil. Any suggestions about a 'better than stock' coil? This truck is just a daily driver, so I don't need any 'go fast' parts. Thanks, I appreciate all info.
Dave, the DuraSpark is around 30-35K volts. The only way that I know of to check it is to ground a sparkplug on the block, and look for a strong "blue" spark from it.
This compares to about 20-25Kv for the ordinary points-type coils. A good aftermarket coil will put out 40-50Kv. The Mallory Promaster is a good bolt-on coil, with no other mods.
The horseshoe style connector is a quick connect setup made specifically for the round post ends.
If you want to use another coil, you'll more than likely just have to cut the wires and splice on open end connectors for the thread and nut ends.
