right now i have one converter and then straight pipe dummy duals and it isnt loud enough for me. One of my friends has his coverter hollowed out and glasspack i think is what he said it is that is made to make 2 into one and turned it around backwards to make dummy duals and it sounds like a dump truck or something like that anyways it sounds awesome. so if i took a regular glasspack put it before my y pipe and turned it around backwards would it do about the same thing. has anyone ever heard of turning them around backwards. thanks for any help.
I had a good mechanic look my f-150 over before i bought it. when he was underneath he said something like "well, your exaust is pretty bad and your pretty much using the converter as a muffler". well, i had no idea that the converter WAS the muffler!! Someone had ynked the muffler out so all i have is the end pipe (which is kinda rusted out) and the converter, and the space where a muffler WOULD be, so i'm coming straight out the converter. Don't know if this is a bad thing or not, but it's not loud at all and i'm surprised at this.
(insert ASCII image here that hasn't worked after 10 min of playing)
AKA, the exhaust comes in and punched out fingers pull the exhaust (and pulses) into the surrounding glass packing. If you turn it backwards, the fingers don't grab but create a little backpressure (less than in the correct direction) and it doesn't work as well (aka, it gets louder).
...so i'm coming straight out the converter. Don't know if this is a bad thing or not, but it's not loud at all and i'm surprised at this.
My boss bought my '84 F150 300 I6. The muffler fell off so he has the pipe coming out the converter and he said it is not that loud and he dosen't plan to buy a muffler. He told me to cut mine out and put in a straight pipe.

300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque!
Tall Paul, what kind of Tach is that in the picture? Looks like something that I could use.
Yeah. This thing's like it was made for the 300 I6:

Got it from J.C. Whitney. Listed as "Illuminated 4000-RPM Electronic Tachometer." Has 3&3/8" face. $64.99 My only complaint is the lighting is not the greatest. I changed from the 1 candlepower to a 2 candlepower bulb and the light is brighter at the top, but I have no trouble seeing it at night even with the 1 candlepower bulb. I would buy it again. Also, there are a whole lot of other models by Datcon (and SW) with various RPM ranges and face sizes to choose from at Fuel Systems in Wisconsin (262 781 4353). Also check out how I mounted it. This just sits in there by friction with the hole that happened to come out just the right size. Had to cut a little plastic behind to gain clearance. Used coping saw blade wrapped with tape on one end, cutting as I pulled.
