Man/Auto Hubs

What is the deal with these hubs, are they auto or manual. Mine don't work in the auto position any more, but I never understood what the difference was in the first place.

Much info here on this topic and using the search feature will net you a ton of reading material. Basically you have ESOF so you have the auto/lock hubs. If your truck was equipped with a lever T-case your hubs would read free/lock. On ESOF equipped trucks a vacum line runs to the hubs to engage them when the 4wd switch is turned. Ford provides a lock feature by turning the hub to lock in the event of a vacum problem. So, I would say you have a vacum problem. Trust me, do a search.
