Why manual hubs...

Just a curious question...

What's the purpose of upgrading to manual hubs... seems that the oem hubs give you the best of both worlds auto and manual?

some of the parts on the oem hubs are plastic and are a weak link for anybody who wants to rely on the 4x4 at any given moment some of the aftermarket hubs are metal pieces so you get stronger parts plus aftermarket hubs by the pair are cheaper then a single oem replacement part

Given time every factory ESOF hub will fail. The 1999-2005 design is very poor, and prone to intermintant functionality and failure. I went through two sets under warranty, and finally got fed up. For me the ESOF hubs would lock in just fine by themselves, but wouldn't unlock all of the time. I'll be that most people who think theirs are working fine, would find out that the hubs are locked in all of the time. Just reach under the vehicle and try to spin the u-joint/axle right near the wheel. If it don't turn, your hubs are locked in. So when you turn the dial on the dash, all that is happening is that the t-case is engaging. I see it all the time when driving around. Excursions and Super Duties, you can look down near the front wheel and see the u-joint spinning.
