So, I am planning to install a new cat-back system on my F250 5.4l and wanted to see what exhaust all of you guys are running. What should I avoid? I am not really worried about performance gains but would like a better sound.
I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but I have a Flow Master dual exhaust system i bought last year. I had the pipes and everything replaced and had two exhaust tips added. I paid $500 for everything including labor. I will trade you the my system for your stock exhaust. I wish i had saved the one they cut off mine. The problem is I go into alot of rich subdivisions (golf communities) for work and they don't want to here the loud noise. I'm always getting dirty looks from the old rich basterds. I wash houses for a living. Anyways, I have reg cab 8' bed.
It's strange how people react differently. I live in a neighborhood that is well off and they all love to hear the turbo(of course until I told them what was making that noise, that thought it was kinda strange that a truck sounded like a jet engine down the road).
I got the flowmasters a few months ago. They sounded alright. I was too cheap to pay the $60 for the tips. A couple weeks ago I sprung for the tips. I didn't realize what a difference the tips made. This truck has got a grawl now. I like it. It's not a stainless steel system but it altogether is only about $250.
I guess it is still cat back but the truck has two cats so it is true duals.
I have the gibson dual sport exhaust for my 2005 F250 (5.4L). Was pretty easy to install, took about 2 hours and did it myself. Got the aluminized, and coated it to protect from rust, because in Rhode Island, rust trashes everything. Tips and all, cost about $340 with shipping, $30 for coating supplies. Has a nice mellow tone to it, can hear it when you lay into it or accelerating, and not too noisy on highway or just cruising. Plus I pull horse trailers, and it was the only system I could find which had both tips out the passenger side. I'm glad I bought the exhaust and wouldn't trade it for another system. Not too obnoxious inside the cab but delivers the sound I want.
if you only want one tailpipe, stick with the stock piping.... it's 3" stock. i replaced the cat and muffler w/ magnaflow units, and added a 4" SS tip.

I got the '04 with same exhaust system. I was a little dissapointed how quiet it is as I am used to being heard form 5 miles away with glasspacks on 460. All in all I think its a nice exhaust, hear it the most in the low RPM's but once you get towing or at cruising speeds there is NO resonance inside the cab.
Easy install, appears to be quality exhuast. DO NOT BUY from cheaptruckparts.com if you want your exhaust within a month.
I got the flowmaster cat back kit. It has the 70 series big block muffler. The noise in the cab is not much more than stock. But has a good sound outside.

That is a good system and cheap too. I have FM Force 2 (70 Series) cat-back on my 04' 6.8l, can't beat it for the price. $203 shipped from autoanything with the FTE discount. (The kit without the tip) Everything fits very well, the clamps that come with the kit are junk so I bought better stainless ones. I added a 4" X 12" Rolled lip Magnaflow tip and it looks great. I have pics in my Gallery.
I went the Borla Stainless duals route, you can barely hear the difference between that and the stock. Actually kinds disappointing...but I like the fact it is stainless up here in salt country.
