Auto zone tells me egr valve bad after reading coad for me,is it an easy fix for non mechanic not afraid to learn guy,Its a 2000 ranger,3.0.If so where is it located.Thank,Paul
Pretty simple task. Two bolts hold the EGR to the intake, there is a LARGE (1 7/8") fitting holding the gas feed tube to the EGR body, a vacuum line and the electrical connection. Disconnect all, and clean the mount gasket surface. Replace.
Are you sure of the code? You can get an EGR code if the vacuum line is loose or broken as there would not be enough vacuum to open the EGR valve.
Or the feed tube could be plugged, and the resulting flow trigger a code.

I've worked on a number of Fords that threw a code saying insufficient egr flow. The first was on a Focus, 2nd was on a F150. I took the egr off, cleaned it perfectly, tested it. Worked completely fine. But the code was still there, and the MIL was still on. The 3rd and 4th time I had a vehicle with this code I deleted the code and did a complete drive cycle (after testing egr of course) and the MIL never came back on.
I would agree with Rockledge. On my 99 B3000 I had the egr code also but after reading here about the DPFE I changed mine and no more problems. It is a simple change to do. Might get some extra vacuum hose in case yours are brittle.
Sometimes, its as simple as a broken vacuum hose. You can see the EGR valve move when the engine is running. Watch the valve thru the holes in the canister, rev the engine between 2000 and 2500 rpm, and you will see the diaphragm move the pintle in and out.
You can test to see if it is stuck(sticking) by removing the vacuum hose and temporarily use direct vacuum from another hose on the engine. jd
