Keep that testlight hooked up to the battery. Unplugging the regulator may or may not make the testlight go out. If it doesn't, then take the large wire coming out of the alternator off. If the light goes out, then you do have an alternator problem.
If the testlight still does not go out, look at the battery + terminal for any added wires, like big amplifier wires, trailer brake wires, or anything added to the terminal. Take these wires loose while watching the testlight.
