So I just pulled all the fuses and that damn light still stayed on, and yes I had the door closed and I pulled out the bulb under the hood.....I even pulled the command start wiring out, but for some reason I suspect that it is in fact the command start thats draining it. Another note, when I pulled the fuse that runs all the external lights, the socket looked a bit chared, but my headlights and tailights work just fine. So now what? Any ideas?
Where is the voltage regulator located? And no I didnt disconnect the alternator wires...and if I do disconnect them and the test light goes out, what does that mean? And just so you guys know, I just got my alternator replaced with a new one like a month and a half ago.
If you disconnect your alternator and the light goes out, take it back to where you got it for testing. The most common fault that drains the battery in a shorted diode in the rectifier circuit inside the alternator.
Alternators tend to cause many varied and strange issues. As to what would cause it to short out I saw it happen because a clamp on the battery was loose. Also very few places sell actual new alternators. 90 percent are just rebuilt and when they rebuild them it depends on who is doing the work on what gets replaced. Just before my truck went down from a blockheater popping out of the block I spent 4 hours going from store to store trying to find an alternator that was good. They thought I was joking when I asked them to test the new alternator before I bought it. It took 9 stores till I got a good one and then only because I went to a shop that rebuilds starters and alternators.
Hmm, I might have to give the mechanic a ring. He told me there's like a lifetime warranty on it or some crap when I initially got it replaced. Umm...so back to my original question, where's the voltage regulator? And where is it located?
Should be on the passenger side inner fender close to the battery and solenoid that is mounted on the fender. I will say though that my truck has 6 extra ground wires on it now to make sure that I don't have any ground issues. I'll take a pic of mine in the morning and post it.
it's a square box on the passenger fender support.it only has 4 screws holding it on an costs less than 20 bucks. if you have tested batteries and they say they are good, you can maybe unplug the regulator while sitting and the next morning crank it up and how it acts. you can change it yourself.
