Hello everyone,
This is my first post on this forum. I'm 16 y.o. from eastern Wyoming and just got my first ford. It is a 1975 f-100 two wheel drive with a 360. I got it from a friends dad that wanted it to go to a good home as he is the original owner . That makes it a free second owner truck for me. The problem it their is a rocker tick on the #1 intake and #'s 3 and 4 exhaust rocker. Originally I thought it was the #5 exhaust becouse the push rod was broke (dont ask me how) but now thats in their is still a little slack in those three rockers. The little bit of slack that is their feels like it is coming from the lifters. Am I right when I say I need new lifters? Thanks in advance for anyone who helps.
Welcome paulswitzer ! i agree with JBradley500. it may seem like a big chunk of cash right now,but you will be happy later. take your time, save up the money, get the parts, and enter the "wonderful world of auto restoration".we will be around to offer advise when you need it.good luck with your truck!-billy
Take it easy on the thing and save your money up to get it done right. You dont want to have to mess with the FE twice.. thats for sure. Treat it right and the tick will be a tick long after your pockets are deep enough to have it done up right. Spend your time/$$ burning tires and gas impressing your buddies, expect to be doing something other than enjoying your ticking Ford truck before you can get that FE dialed in
First wash the top of the motor down, get it to operating teperature them remove the valve cover. Start up and let idle then stick a feeler gauge say for starters .015" and slide it between the valve stem and rocker while idling.
If that offending valve stops ticking and stays quiet you may have a lifter plunger that's stuck and not pumping up. A pushrod that's too short would have problems with many other cylinders. I don't think you would have that much cam wear that the lifter could no take up the slack.
What does the oil look like and the total mileage on the motor?
It been sitting a long time and run without oil changes.
No sense throwing money and parts at it right away before you get it running right only later when your ready to rebuild it and have the money then do it right. Hey welcome to the forum we can spend your money fast.
