F-450 transmission problems.

Hello Everyone.

I am new to this forum. I hope someone can help me.

I have an 03 F-450 with the six speed. It has been grinding going from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th.

I had the tranny serviced and it seemed to only make it worse.

Dealer quoted $ 6000.00 to repair. They want to replace transmission. It seems excessive. They don't know what is wrong with it, but it hasn't been taken out.

Has anyone had a similar problem as this ?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank-you

How many miles on it ?? Now those are a hydraulic clutch I believe,,,from a dead stop,,does it go into gear ok,,or is it tough to get into gear ??

Could be not enough clutch throw when pushing in the pedal ?

Seems to go into gear just fine.

It seems like it is only in those two gears.

although not familiar with the transmission,it sounds like syncronizers
I would think it could be repaired for a lot less than $6k

Here are a few more details.

It only happens 3rd and 4th 1 , 2 and fifth are fine. If you pause for a while when shifting then it won't grind.

It has never jumped out of gear.

To put things in perspective, ZF 6 speed transmissions sell on ebay for under $2000. There are 6 of them listed right now.

While heavy, a transmission R&R, plus a clutch/pressure plate and throwout bearing replacement isn't real difficult. A couple of guys could get it done in an easy weekend, not counting any machining time needed to resurface the flywheel.

big builder, check with the web site I have listed here. There great in price and they will drop ship. Remanufactured to factory specifications. 12 month warranty, unlimited miles on anything but abuse, low fluid level or disassembled. They remanufacture standard shift transmissions and transfer cases, from 3-speed to 6-speed, foreign and domestic.

Thank you everyone for all your help.

At this point I will follow this procedure. - Replace fluid which is known good.
- Check master levels.
- Check that clutch is disengaging completely ( I don't know how yet but I will look into it)
- Find one and try to replace myself.

Thanks again. This forum is fantastic!
