Check the fuel pump relay first. When they go, they usually are intermittent to begin with then just die. Swap out the fuel pump relay with one that isn't critical at the moment. There should be about 3 or 4 of them that control different things. They are located under the hood.

Relay, not fuse.

He didn't say fuses, he said relays. There are a group of relays that control things lie the AC, fuel pump, etc. Just switch them around and see what you get. You can get them cheaply at the local parts store. The best replacements are the ones with all the pins, so they can be used to replace any of the relays if needed.

" fuel pump circuit open pcm to motor " is what the code reader comes up with.

The fuse and the relay are certainly not the entire fuel pump circuit. On my '92, I had a bad connection somewhere between the fuse and the relay. If you've decided that the fuse and relay are good, then it's time to get out a voltmeter and a wiring diagram, and determine where the break in the circuit is. When I do it, I start at the battery and work down the circuit until the voltage drops. Where the voltage drop is is where the problem is. Be sure to ground the fuel pump test lead so the fuel pump relay will be closed.

Check and make sure the connection on the bottom of the inertia switch is tight. That was the problem on my 95, and was I almost ready to put a fuel pump in it until I read thru the wiring diagram. Many people just check to see if the inertia switch is popped, but you have to also make sure the connection at the bottom is good. The inertia switch is also a good place to use a test light. If you have juice to that, then the problem is between the inertia switch and the pump. This would rule out the PCM and FP relays and the ignition switch.

The next time the FP quits, whack the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet or similar. Often, the vibration will "re-energize" the FP if the short is there. If you can hear the pump whirl when you turn the key to on then, its probably a short at the pump, and you'll have to drop the tank.

I have the exact problem with my 94 Explorer 4.0 auto. It will run fine for months and then just leave me stranded. Sometimes it will start in minutes. Sometimes it takes hours. When it doesn't run, the fuel pump is not energizing. I can tell as soon as I turn the key if it's going to run or not.

I've replaced the relay (I carry a spare) and checked the connections but I haven't found a problem. It's so intermitent I won't take it to the shop. I have noticed it seems to behave better in warmer weather.

Please post again if you find a problem. I'd really love to fix this thing!!

with it being intermittant, I'd bet it was a short at the FP. Probably going to have to drop the tank--not a bad job, provided you plan it right and you didn't just fill up.
