Unhappy Bummed Out!

With the price of gas over $3.15 I took the Accord to pick up my son at college this past Sunday. That meant my wife took the EX to church. On her way home she spun out on some ice on a bridge . Fortunately nobody was hurt and no other vehicles were involved.
Hit the left front corner and left rear corner to the tune of +$6120.00 (current estimate). Boy the costs add up fast, and I think our labor rates are low here. That includes new quarters, bumpers, brackets, paint, plastics and some straightening. There probably is more hidden damage. The rear doors are pinched together and can't get them open, so there is bound to be something there. Luckily no glass broke and it's driveable. Really bummed me out.

I install each fall a set of 265/75R16 Bridgestone Blizzak W965 winter tires. 10 ply and man am I glad I do. I have been in a few situations where if I had my stockers on I would have been much worse off. I cant begin to explain just how much of a difference they make, even with a big heavy rig like this. The control on ice is awesome and I recommend these to everyone.

Any questions... ask away..

I've been running winter's on all my vehicles since 1996 and have avoided many nasty situations..

I don't think the tires would have mattered. Got new Cooper 10 ply ATR's on. We get over 200 inches of snow a year here. It was a layer of black ice on a down sloping bridge with a driver who is terrified of spinning out. She slammed the breaks expecting the antilocks to stop her. That don't work around here. If you don't practice sliding a 8000 pound sled around, you'll be able to do it right in an emergency. I spun it once on the interstate a 70mph when I hit some slush. EX's just don't perform well on snow and ice. I'd rather have a Suburban in for snow and icy weather driving, with the exception of deep deep snow, 12" or more.

Damage photos

See what inertia can do. This happened at 30 mph. Doesn't look like much, $6120 first estimate. Can't account for unseen damage.

The rear quarter panel, bumper and things underneath need replaced. If you look at the doors you can see they are misaligned and pinched together, so the backend is out of square.

Front End
Tougher to see the damage here. The bumper is toast and lots of damage underneath. The quarter panel is fixable.

Wink

I am happy to hear she is ok and good luck getting your rig back into shape. I do agree with you on the black ice, nervous driver thing however, the didicated snow and ice tires we have on our vehicle has kept my wife (who hates winter driving) out of some nasty spots.

Again, just a suggestion on the tires, not a "cure all" and glad to hear everyone was ok.

She was on a bridge with concrete walls. I haven't been across it since she hit it to see if she left any marks. I'm really glad she didn't knock the wall down because it is a pretty high bridge.
