7.3L or 6.0L Excursion??

I currently own a 2006 F350 Diesel truck and I love it, but I need more room for stuff. I tow a race car to the track and I need more room that is covered up, etc...

This weekend I drove my buddies 2000 7.3L excursion and I really liked the ride, etc... I did find a lot of sway when towing a 28ft trailer so a rear sway bar is in order. Anyway I am looking to buy an excursion and I am stuck trying to decide which model year/engine I want.

The 7.3L is bulletproof, takes modifications well and is a good motor. Less HP than the 6.0L, but far less problems. I did not like the transmission though compared to my 5 speed torqshift. I love my 6.0L, but the 2003/2004 6.0L's scare me with all of the problems they are/have had.

So whats the verdict? Which model to get?

Does anyone have a FAQ on what changed during the different model years?

You pretty much said it already. 6.0 has more power and a much better trans. I have an early '04 EX and have had no problems. I believe you either get a good one or a bad one. Get an oasis report on what you are looking at, and cross your fingers, but you already have a 6.0, so you know what your getting into.

I just went through this exact questions. I talked to everyone I know who knows, owns, works on, PSD's. EVERY single one of them said if you have a choice get the 7.3. If you have to get a 6.0 make sure you get as new of one as possible.

When I shopped for an Excursion, I had to drive 6 hrs to get mine. That was because I wanted a 7.3L one. If I wanted an 03 or 04 or even 05, I could have had it easily. What do you think?

FWIW....I did a lot of shopping and talking before I bought my x and was told over and over again to avoid the 6.0... My nephew works on fords and said stay with the 7.3.. I was flying out to Texas to get the one I wanted when a friend at Build a DIesel found one local for me. I never drove it stock, had all the mods put on before hand,he picked it up for me.... I really really love it. I will say I did drive a stock one later and it felt a little ummm S L O W.. so don't drive a stock one and get all turned off because you can make these guys scream!! Very under powered stock! Good luck in your search!!

I have an 05 with 15k on it. I just discovered a small oil leak. The dealer just changed the oil in it so I think that has something to do with it. Other than that I LOVE it. :-)

These decisions are always tough because I really like the torqshift transmissions and when the 6.0L is working its a great motor. BUT that is a big BUt from everything I have seen.

7.3Ls are harder to come by for a reason. Nuff said.

As you can tell from my user name I have had some troubles with my '03 / 6.0 ! But all issue where worked out with updated flashes for the engine and replacing the injectors, which was all covered under warrenty. I absolutely love my early model 6.0 so DON't rule them out, the outperform the 7.3 Currently have about 80k miles

I found a very nice 2000 Ex Limited with only 55k on the odometer, but the guys wants stupid money for it. Like we wants 27k and will talk at 25k. No matter how good the 7.3L is these older Excursions are going for 25% more than the book value is. Is it really worth that much?

I meant for 25-30k I can buy a 2004 6.0L with the same mileage and its 4 yeras newer!

Thoughts?
