im in the market for new intake. been browsin ol but every one says they re the best. have stock with k n element. p.s. is there a cheap way to make my own with the same performance as the 250-300 $$ intakes
I used the instructions found in this forum and used the 6637 NAPA filter, a NAPA clamp that is designed to apply pressure 360 degrees around a pipe, and a 35 degree angle piece of 4 inch exhaust. It cost me $105.00. The filter is massive but fits in behind the battery once the OEM intake box is removed. I also went a bit futher and created a heat shield out of some sheet metal. I like it and saved at least $150.00 for gauges. The only downside is that the guys here suggest replacing the filter every year and they are the greatest expense in the modification. I personally don't like washing and oiling the re-useable filters anyway.
Really! They let too much dust in to the turbo inlet. Can hurt the propellers on the turbo.
This is a huge no no no. I have heard this from the dealer and from 94-97 stroker's forum.
it lets too much air by, let me rephrase, the filter element gaps are too large and it doesnt trap the smaller particle of dirt which will dust your turbo and scoure cylinder walls. also the drop in kandn's dont seal right in the stock airbox, nor does any filter for that matter. anything is better then the stock airbox. as for the homemade kit, here is my 100% homemade kit. 6637 filter from napa- 30 bucks, 4 inch turbo tube with roughly a 45 degree bend and 4 inch silicone connectors
Here is a test performed for a duramax guy, by a fte guy, very interesting information. Although they didn't test the 6637 the WIX filter is very similar to the 6637. If you will notice the most important # is the percentage filter efficiency for most is above 99%, the k&n is 96%. All associated disclaimers apply http://www.duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm
the one on the filter is called a constant tension clamp, also found on all intercooler tubes. if you dont want to buy new then most big rigs use 4 inch cooler tubes, hit the junkyards
Dang, that stinks. I just bought the k&n kit this past summer too. Now what? Can I buy a different filter to stick on the intake tube of their kit? What brand would you recommend, and where could I find one?
can you snap a picture of it? if its anything like most of the other kits it should fit, worse case it would be too long and just trim it back, but a pic would be great
