5spd - adjustments??

my buddy took his 96 psd 5spd in for a tranny service because it had notchy shifting. they told him they made an adjustment, common for these 5spd's. now it shifts great. Any idea what adjustment and how?? my 94 could use some help.

There are NO external adjustments..... however they may have replaced the shifter guide pieces just below the shifter handle....known to wear out.
