Okay batteries were dead on my truck. I recharged one of them replaced the other batterey. Then the next day both were dead again then I replaced the one I recharged on the truck. Truck started and ran fine for 100 miles. Then the Battery gage showed batteries dead again. Check the Altenator showed charging 12v I changed it any way. But still truck was very hard to start.
Now battery light is on when I turn Air conditioner on or windshield wipers. If I have nothing on seems to hold a charge slightly very slightly. If I turn somthing on well starts dropping rather quickly.
where did you get the alt. from??? check and clean all connections all the way down to the starter..also there is a plug on the top of the alt with 2 wires...there is a sharp bend on the wires and it tends to break the wire at the plug..trace all wires and make sure there not rubbing and shorting out...
If you have a good digital volt meter, measure the voltage when engine is idling.. voltage should be around 14 volts if charging properly. The battery light does show your alternator might be bad or like Ron says above, check the small wires directly coming out of the alternator.. Mine shorted out last month right about 2 inches from the plug, where they bend over the alternator housing.. I was getting an intermitted battery light on the dash..
If the batteries go dead with the truck just sitting you can do some simple tests you can do without any equipment (DMM etc.). Charge the batteries, disconnect the alternator, pull the fuse that goes to the ignition and let it sit. If batteries still go dead you know it wasn't the alternator or anything in the ignition path so your probably looking at a wiring issue. If they don't go dead, plug in the alternator, or ignition fuse (you get the idea) and repeat test.
If you can start the truck and then the batteries go dead after a few miles then the alternator is not charging the batteries. Tell them you want a different alternator. Check to make sure you connections are clean and good. You should be about 12.5V or so without the engine running and about 13.5 to 14.5 with the engine running. Then check the voltage again if you turn the wiper, fan and headlights on, the alt should step up the output and maintain the previous reading within a few tenths of a volt.
