I have a '99 F250 with a 7.3L Powerstroke. The driver side battery was dead so i replaced it. The stock guage shows it is charging, but two days later the new battery was dead. I recharged it left the truck run for about 10 minutes showing it was charging. Today the new battery is dead overnight from just sitting. Any suggestions????
I have an 03 and it has run-down protection, that automatically turns off power to anything causing current draw (i.e. lights, power port, etc). I imagine your vehicle has the same feature. Purhaps there is a failure of whatever controls that circuit or maybe you bought a defective battery.
You have a short somewhere, go have it checked. A quick test is to pull the positive cable, put a volt meter om the bat pos and the cable end, if you read volts you have a current draw. You can start pulling fuses one at a time till it goes away and that is the short, if the short is after the fuse.
The batteries in these trucks are in paralle, meaning they are being charged and discharged at the same time. If on one is being discharged I wonder if the battery cables are good and the connections are clean. Also check the ground for the alternator and batteries at the engine or chassis. I had an explorer that they replaced the battery and the alternator at the dealer for the same problem and found that it was a dirty connection at the block that was not allowing it to charge fully. Cost Ford about $400 to find that out (all under warrenty).
