Ok so i got a used sony cd deck and tried to install it.
i downloaded a "this should be right" type of how to install a cd player manual from some website that says it was specific to my vehicle down to the vin
long story short, i cut the harnesses going to the factory radio and tried to splice everything up to the sony and double checked everything leaving me with doubt only about 2 wires (both listed as possible grounds due to them having the same color)
no power to radio
i didnt have my multimeter with me so i tried to power on the old radio with resplicing the old harness and still, no power
any ideas whats goin on here?
fuse on the radio seems fine
could i have blown a fuse somewhere else?
i will:
a. try to find my chiltons/haynes manual for wiring diagrams
b. use my multimeter to look for power
hopefully i will discover my problem using my tools
The problem is going to arise in the cutting of the factory harness. Spending the extra 12 bucks on a direct fit harness would have been the way to go. They go thru the trouble of figuring out the pinout for you, and you don't have to do anything permanent.
No ground would cause a no power scenario. Make sure all your connections are clean and wrapped with tape so there are no shorts. Did you confirm that this head unit worked before you tried putting it in?
no wiring adapter, cut the factory harness cause I'm a cowboy like that (aren't we all?? lol)
after i took the dash off guess what the very next phrase that came out of my mouth was?? lol
ill give you a hint there was a "why" a "*****" and an "idiot"
lol
never tested the previous headunit
the factory wont work now either
thought i had all my wires connected well enough by no means permament nor would i be comfortable stuffing the radio back in the dash like that . . but still, they were good enough for the thing to power on . . . so i though

Reason: left out info
If the factory radio won't work either, there's a cut or break in a wire somewhere probably away from the ends you cut.
Bench test the new radio. We used to just connect them to a car battery to see if they'd power on. If it works on the bench, you know the truck needs some TLC.
Check the fuses in the truck for any breaks, and even if you don't see a bad one, try swapping the radio fuse. I've had fuses go out that looked perfectly fine.
I would have NEVER cut the wires on the factory harness, it takes less time to wire up the adapter than to figure out which wire is which. Plus, it makes for an easy uninstall if you decide to change radios or sell the truck. BTW, there are also a bunch of fuses under the hood on the driver's side, since you may have wired something wrong I'd check those fuses also.
Damn, one of the main reasons I'm glad I have a 4-channel amp, makes it so much easier to wire.. Good luck with the problem. Any stereo shops in your area? Mine was a great help when I installed my new Alpine and didn't charge nothin'.
Well, I have the same problem as this guy. The only difference is, I have the ford manual that details wire colors and their function and I DO have a multimeter. The only problem I seem to be having is no power to the continuous 12+ line (Green/Purple). Using the Multimeter with a good ground, I have power to the accessory lines:
I've hooked up the stereo according to the specs (SONY). Since I could not get powder to the continuous 12V+ I wired the radio up the the switched power. Sure enough the SONY player works. The only problem is, without the continuous 12V supply, the clock and presets will not stay. Every time you start the truck the radio starts with factory defaults. I've checked all the fuses below the steering wheel and to the left. Someone else mentioned fuses under the hood?
I know this thread is old but any help would be appreciated.
