I am at my wits end. Everytime it rains my 2001 escape misfires and it takes awhile for it to get out of its system. I started putting fuel injector treatment in it and filling up with gas because often times the gas was low. This always fixed the problem and once it dried up outside it was fine. But yesterday it was full with gas and was the worse it has ever been. It misfired and wouldn't go faster than 40 miles an hour and that took awhile to get to that speed. I don't know what to have checked. I am afraid of taking it to a shop and they get over on me and have me replace unecessary parts. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
Try cleaning the mass air flow sensor. be sure to use maf cleaner. when mine got dirty it acted in the same manor. once I cleaned it it ran much better, however the prolblem was not totally fixed untill I replaced it alltogether. hope this helps
rather than fuel related, I would suspect one the electrical parts affected by the moisture, like the coil over plugs. Which one is anyone's guess without any codes being thrown to indicate the cylinder, but I'd check them out.
It would be a good idea to scan it even if the CEL isn't lit. I've seen misfire codes as "pending" codes which don't light the CEL (I beleive they don't anyway...)
