anyone have any suggestions on what you can do with a bed that has surface rust. i would rather not strip it down and re-finish it but i want it to look a bit better than it does. i dont have any rust-through holes but there are some holes drilled for where a tool box used to sit. and its not going to be a show piece so i dont want to replace the panels.
There is a product called rust bullet, a little pricey at $129 a gal. Two coats and rust is done, not much prep for it either just descale heavy rust. I plan to use it on my 72 then I want to linex the box. Get it at rust bullet.com

Metal Prep or a Product like Picklex will work too. I generally used the metal prep. It has a phosphoric acid that will enhanced primer bond, and will remove minor rust. POR15 has a metal prep that's like rust bullet, requires no rust removal. Just clean of loose material. I have only used the metal prep, it's cheap and works for me. You must keep the surface wet for 10 min for it to do its thing. Then you must throughly remove the solution from the surface, water works file, use Compressed air to force dry. Prime with your preferred primer asap, as you knows it will start rusting in a short period of time.
I've heard of this, you have to use the prep to make it adhear properly. the rust bullet is one a step job, but I gather it must have no water...none not even sweat falling into the mix or it's toast. Check it out on the web, they talk a good line I guess time will tell if their challange is ever taken up on.
I was reading about the Rust Bullet product tonight at the Thanksgiving party, it looked great with the result samples. It's suppose to be much better than POR15, I have used POR15 with good results but the brush marks from it are showing thru the black finish spray coat. Next time I will try Rust Bullet on my rims if it comes in white to prevent dark chip marks on white rims.

Let us know how it turns out.
I'm using POR15 now, gloss on the diff housing and semi-gloss on the frame, I haven't had issues with brush marks...
Just reread about Rust Bullet, does not come in white like I wanted just silver.
My truck rims are 9.50 and 12.00 off a friends 79 1 ton Ford that he sold to me the day after purchasing the truck. I believe they have enamal paint on them that has chipped away under 28 years of rock chips.
Some day i'll sand blast then apply Rust Bullet then Ford's off white rim paint.
I've used POR15 on my frame and it works very good if everything is prepped right. The problem is its not UV prtected so you must top coat it or it will fade. Don't know id rust bullet is any different. Ether one of these would be a good base if you wanted to do linex or rino liner after.
