92 F-250 4x4 7.3 auto. Transmission only works in first 2 gears. Won't work at all when put in D position. Only works when in 1 or 2 on shifter indicator.Works in reverse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
the power transmission follows a different path in manual first and second than in D first and second so there is something that failed which is being bypassed in manual first and second.
I'm too tired to go digging in the garage for my diagnostic wheel right now.
Did you try pushing the OD cancel button and then selecting D?
That also bypasses some of those same internal components as well.
If so, you "might" get third to work, but, without a doubt, a rebuild is needed.
Check all the trans electrical connections especially the one on the right side with the tin cover, remove the tin heat shield, remove the solenoid connector by pushing on the center tab and pulling up on the wire harness. To install push down until a click is heard. Always reinstall the tin heat shield.
Your looking for corroded, bent or missing pins and water etc.......
My question x2 is: Did this start while driving? or Did it occure the next time you started it up and shifted into gear?

The shifting problem started while driving the second time. The first time it happened after installing a rebuilt 7.3 engine in truck.I stopped checked for possible leaking. Restarted truck and shifted fine. Ran around 100 miles or so with no problems.Shifting problem reoccurred while driving. Tried switching OD off then back on. That worked a couple times in shifting in D. Then it went right back to nothing in D, only in 1 and 2. Limped it back home and their it sits. I haven't had a chance to crawl under it and check the wiring. That sounds like a good possibility. I appreciate all the feedback. This is an awesome forum.I'm going to pull on my coveralls and have a look at the wiring to trans.
Update-
Went out and started truck.Temp.20 degrees F. Started after awhile. Hadn't been plugged in or started for a couple days.Decided to take for a short ride. Trans. shifted up through the gears in drive.
Something I forgot to mention earlier is I have had an ongoing problem with a Tachometer that goes out once in a great while. I just pull over and restart the truck and it usually goes back to acting normal. Could trans. and tach.problems be related? Tach has been working fine through these last couple trans. glitches.
You have an electrical problem. Check the connector at the passenger side of the transmission (there is only one on that side). Be carefull when you pull that conector, it is a stupid design.
You have to first remove the heat shield to access it, to pull the connector itself, push the locking tab in the middle of the connector while pulling up on the harness, be as gentile as you can.
Three basics with E4OD. 1- Tach pick up sensor-tach must be working, 2- VSS- the PCM needs to know the vehicle speed- speedometer working flawless, , 3- Since you just installed a rebuilt engine!- is the Fuel Injection Position Lever adjusted correctly- middle wire key on- 1.1 volts at idle, 3.8 - 4.3max at WOT position-no dead spots in betweeen.
