Can you give me the long version of what ICP & IPR stand for?

Injector Control Pressure and Injector pressure regulator. The ICP is located on the drivers side cylinder head towards the front. It angles up and inward toward the middle of the engine. Look along the head and you will see along the top inboard part of the head, what looks like a long tube which is actually casted into the head. Thats the oil rail. Look in the valley of the engine, Underneath your fuel filter bowl is the High pressure oil pump. On the drivers side of the pump there are two braided steel lines coming off. . . one to each head. Each of those lines bolts to the oil rail in each head. follow the line going to the drivers side head. Look for and aft of the line. . . you will see a series of plugs and on the far forward side there will be the ICP sensor in place of the plug. The IPR is located on the bottom drivers side of the HPOP. Its a two pin connector with a metal clip to hold it in place. That connector only serves one perpose. It magnitizes the coil that is around the IPR valve body itself. THe only thing holding the magnetic solinoid is a thin jam nut on the end of the IPR valve body. Make sure that nut is still in place. You should not be able to slide the solinoid along the valve body shaft. I'm trying to describe this as best as possible. . . if somebody has a picture for this guy that would help. FYI, I think when my IPR was disconnected, I still showed oil pressure when I cranked. . . in fact I'm sure of it.

To answer your question. . . The ICP reads the high pressure oil pressure, and the IPR is what controls that pressure. The computer uses input from the IPC to control the IPR.

Your going to have to get a scanner on it, and watch ICP while cranking. That will tell you if you have a problem in the HPOP area. You may have to pay a shop if you can't find someone in your area with a scanner. It needs to be Ford diesel specific.

Help!help!!help!!!

Sitting at Treadwell Ford in Mobile. Can't get ANYBODY to look at it because they are SOOOO backed up. I chose them because they are the biggest and had the shortest waiting time. I used to work at a place and we had a delivery truck that did the same thing and we changes the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor and it fired right off. With 224,000 miles, I am thinking about getting them to change that anyway. What do you experts think?

Usually a CPS doesn't just quit. They will give you problems for a long time before they finally give up the ghost. Has it died on you before? It doesn't sound like its the CPS to me. Was the bang you heard out of the tail pipe? or was it somewhere under the hood?

I think don't pay them to do it(the CPS). You can do it yourself in 10 minutes start to finish. All you need is a 10mm wrench and the part which you can walk to the parts counter and get for around $25.

$90 an hour gets pricey real quick.

Since you are waiting anyway. . . something you could do. . . . is dissconnect one of the HPOP lines and have somebody crank it for just a short amount of time. If the pump is working you will have a large oil mess to clean up. Nothing a bottle of mineral spirits can't handle(I have a little experience in that department.) If the pump is not working. . . you will get nothing. I've never heard of a pump breaking but wierder things have happened. You might want to disconnect the plugs that go into the valve covers just in case for some reason it decides to start on you.
Tim

If the pump is working. . . you will know imediately. It will start pumping oil out of the line imediately.

Help!help!!help!!!

I don't know. All I know is that I make my living selling on the road. I do not know what to do. I am grabbing at straws, but I am about willing to try anything.

well if you have a 3/4 or 11/16 open end wrench, try popping one of those lines off. But I would get some new orings from the dealer so you can put a new one on. Try and describe the pop you heard for us. Where did the noise come from. . . and what did it sound like. And again. .. . any troubles before this?
Tim

PS. The most important thing you can do is to keep calm. . . its just a problem and problems can be fixed. So lets try to work it out

I cannot remember if it was a pop, or just the shock of the motor quitting just after I put it in reverse. Yea, its only money. I really do not know if it was a pop or not. I just know that it is at the Ford Store and I cannot get enybody to work on it because they are swamped.

Here's my guess the Air Condition/Heater blend door slammed shut the same time the truck quit and you'll be fine! Fuses are the first place to start, check them all with a meter not just eyesight. Then put CPS in it if that's not it you needed another one anyway. Listen for the fuel pump! Can you here it when you turn the key on?

I hope that you are right. I need it to make a living. I just talked to the service guy at Treadwell and he is supposed to call me back before 3:00 pm CST.

John:

I'll be in Mobile on Saturday, but that doesn't do you any good at the moment. I've checked with out 7.3 Roadside Assistance network listings, and can't find anyone close enough to do you any good. Since I have not lived in Mobile since highschool (too many years ago), I do not know of any other repair locations that I could recommend in good faith. Hopefully you'll get a good, honest tech to work with who will drive the issue to ground quickly.

John,
As Pete said, I wont be in that neck of the woods for a few days or I would try and help you out.
Lets make sure they try the obvious and small things first, CPS, dont let them charge you more than $25 for the part. the number is F7TZ-12K073B if they say they have to use the same part number but it ends in A then they are trying to get you to buy their expensive backstock.

Hope all works out well, I have not heard anything bad about Treadwell Ford
