Hi, I have a problem that I can't quite figure out. I bought a block as a replacement for my current engine . The guy that sold it to me said it was a 390 from a Ford cyclone. I have disassembled the engine. The intake is from a 428 CJ, the heads have different casting numbers. All the parts seem to be mixed from different years. The block has a date code of 2J13, but there are no casting numbers anywhere. The block is ribbed on the outside. (not sure if that helps.) What I would like to know is if anyone has any idea why there is no casting number and is there anyway I can figure out what it originaly in?
I'll share a little more information. It has a 2 web design internally. It also has a 2u crank, which is a 390 truck crank. The bore and stroke also measure as a 390. I have heard the phrase (Service Replacement Block) but I'm not sure what that means.
I would just like to figure out what it came out of?
Any help will be appriciated.
Block has a date code of 72/Sept/13th. So it's not original to your car. Normal for some of those blocks not to have casting numbers. It's either a service or production block. Service block is if you needed to buy a brand new block from Ford/Merc this would be what you got. The same as a production block for the most part. Came as a bare block as a block assy covered with cosmoline, bagged and in a box with a Ford part number on the box. Some FE heads can match and have a different casting number. If you can tell us what they are we can tell you if they are ok to run as a set together. The CJ intake was iron and wil carry a C8OE-9425-A or C8OE-9425-C casting number. PI intakes are aluminum and there are a few different numbers they can have. So check your heads and intakes and post what you find.
The D2 has induction hardened seats on the exhaust. The C8 is just a earlier version with out that. Both are physically the same exact casting. Also common to find them matched like that if a head was replaced at one time. Good heads as there is not really a bad FE head.
