There is nothing electrical that will allow reverse but not forward. Something broke inside. We can all take out guesses, but the bottom line is this trans is going to come out to get fixed.
GeoffNJ, It goes like this.I was pulling up to a customers house, the engine stalled. ( I'm thinking this is not my ranger a stick) Started it back up turned around, backrd up into the drive. Unloaded the things we needed,. Had to go get a part we needed. Drove about 2 miles and saw the tranny temp was about 220. I then saw the tack and the speedo were not in sink.I was able to get it off to the side of the road. It would move alittle backwards but willingly. The guy (Zack)doing the rebuild said the converter just came apart. I went and saw the damage it did a great job. Zack was even inpressed. But it did not move in reverse as it should. Zack checked mine for codes and the only one that showed was one saying there was a chip in it or something like that. The best to you. Alan
Thanks everyone. I'm not in denial about having to get it fixed. I want to rule out all the possibilities before I take it to someone and lose my truck for a week. I'd be quite happy with a rebuild, if needed, and wish I could justify the cost of a BTS or the equivalent. This is my work truck that I promised myself I'd have for 10 years before I replaced it.
I know I didn't post much good news Geoff. You probably noticed very few things in the table that you can check without pulling the tranny. Most of those are inspect and replace if damaged. I would make sure the linkage is right and perhaps drop the pan and see what the filter and fluid look like. You might have some telltale debris in there.
That is what I would do. After that it would be beyond my capabilities except maybe pulling and checking the VB assembly. Maybe someone else will chime in. Good luck.
Being Sunday, I can't get too much done today. I talked with someone who said it sounds like a stuck valve body not letting the pressure build. We've gone over everything we can think of and tomorrow I'll get a hold of the trans shop.
Actually, if you call on Sunday and just let the phone ring, you can get things done on Sunday.
I took the truck over to the trans guy this morning. He's giving me a Ford rebuild with 3 year warranty and upgrading the TC. He did tell me I was lucky to get 185,000 miles out of the 4R100 transmission.
I said, "But, if I build a house that's going to last 100 years, shouldn't I have a foundation that will do the same?"
Anyway, I'll have it back tomorrow.
Here's the bad news...I towed it over there on a 7-ton trailer pulled by a....Chevy 2500 gasser. I should have thrown a tarp over my truck. The terrain here is as flat as Kansas except for the overpasses on the highway. On the overpasses the truck bogged down to 54MPH from 65. The Powerstroke would never have let that happen...
I explained the symptoms and said *I* thought it sounded like a stuck valve body problem. (trying to sound like I knew something LOL)
He said, "yeah...it's probably pieces of your torque converter keeping them stuck open."
I'm sure he'll show me the mess tomorrow. My stepfather is going past there in the morning to see how it's going. I'm going to add a cooler to it very soon. This made me realize I'm neglecting my truck...it's all the fault of those damn, needy kids of mine.
Yeah, Mike, the truck barely fit on the trailer. I had to winch it 3 times. First I hooked the frame rings, locked it, moved the hooks down the frame rail, locked it, then for the final 18," grabbed the axle. With the front tires all the way on the front frame of the trailer, I barely got the ramps up. As for the "Cheffie," it was well into its limit on hauling. That "little" 6 liter gas job was not up to the task. I hope it still works tomorrow.
I'll keep this picture to remind me of the shame one must endure when one does not properly maintain their PSD.
