Heater shakes

Hi guys.
I just put a heater core in my 66 f250 and it shakes. when i bought the truck, the heater was already taken off so i'm not sure if the previous owner lost a part or if it's just supposed to shake. does anybody know anything about it that could tell me what to do?

I am not sure what you mean by shaking. I have had 6 F100's and none had what you are describing. If the housing is not attached to the body it could shake due to the vibration of the motor and travel. You may need to check and see if the screws that hold the housing are there.

First and foremost, welcome to FTE!! If it's not the fan wonder if the inlet and outlet hoses would shake if reversed. I have a 65 F100 and believe 65 and 66 are same. I routed the hose closest to the passenger side inner fender to the inlet of the water pump, and the other hose is routed to the intake manifold. Posted pic of the heater box installed in cab, and the other of the hose routing in the engine compartment.

Also have a disassembled box, minus the motor, I can take pic's if think can be of any help.

It's not the housing that is shaking. the problem is that the only thing that is attached to the heater core is the hoses. there is nothing in the housing that is holding it in place so it just moves at will.

If anything like the 65, the heater box is attached to metal housing. This metal housing has 3 studs and 2 holes for the heater radiator. The firewall will have corresponding holes for the radiator inlet/outlet and the 3 metal housing studs and secured to the firewall thru the engine compartment using corresponding nuts. Sorry for the pathetic attempt at explaining, added couple additional pic's to gallery, pic's aint too hot but there are 3 studs on the metal housing.

Dave,
yeah i got the heater box attached to the metal housing and bolted through the firewall and everything but the actual core doesn't have anything that holds it in place. I don't know if it's supposed to have something or if it is just supposed to be sitting there. there's nothing holding it in place inside the housing and i'm just wondering if there is supposed to be something there to hold it in one place.

You will need to secure it in the proper position. Take some of the black insulation used in AC work. Can be found at most Hardware stores. Cut the foam so it will be sandwitched between the housings. This needs to be sealed all the way around. Just use strips 1 - 1.5" wide.

I think my 68 used a clamp that held the core in place. It had foam insulation on the plate, and the plate was screwed to the housing. Not sure if it's the same as yours, for mine had factory air.

It has been several years since been inside heater assembly. Recall there being a soft rubber type insulation material on the sides and bottom of the heater core, don't remember seeing a retainer. The pics in shop manual are not helpful. Perhaps another member with recent experience can help, if not, suggest going to local hardware and picking up some insulation using some type of contact glue, sparingly. Believe for later, and maybe earlier, model trucks there was a seal kit. Probably want to be carefull so the copper/brass fittings, and or, piping is not too ridig and subject to break. As probably aware, there are 2 rubber pads that mount on the end of the the inlet/outlet in engine compartment before the hoses are connected. Was going to suggest inside rubber grommets mounted on firewall same dia. as inlet/outlet but may be overkill and possible stress area. Anyhow, just some additional food for thought, sometime have to improvise with these old relics.

Originally there were black rubber insulation pads on either side of the core ends. There's no part number for these pads, all the parts catalog sez is "improvise."

Looks like Dennis Carpenter, LMC list a 'heater seal kit' . D.C list a kit for 57-60, with no pic's, and LMC list a kit for 67-72, and does have pic's, found the part listed in their catalog and should be able to see online. Catalogs I have are out dated prices indicate between $10-$12. Check with FTE sponsor part suppliers, found couple do not have online catalogs. Ordered free catalogs online from suppliers who offered them; mine are old, spindled and mutilated.

OK, I went out to the garage and took apart the "spare" heater assembly I have. As blue68f100 noted there is insulation that when everything is put back together will hold the heater core in place. The PO had also taken what looks like a piece of tin approx 1/2 inch wide and 1/8th inch longer than necessary and also used that to "pinch" the core in place. Hope that helps.
