hi im new. looked for a into but did not see, i have a 66 shortbed f100 that has been swapped with a 460ci, auto tranny from a 78. at idle my vehicle is fine and smooth, with just a little rise in rpm the vehicle shakes pretty violently then will smooth out when higher rpms are reached. has only had this same problem or know a possible cause. i have been told balancer or flex plate would be first things to check out. i have been on the site for year but never a login member untill now.
They are right, find out if you have an externally balanced engine or not, or an internally balanced one, and make sure you are using the according flexplate and balancer. Unless its missing or something as you rev it up a little
Like 'wdfp' said , balance maybe. my 79 has a balance weight behind the timing cover, if it has been left out it will shake. I thought FMCO started putting them in about78 or 79,not sure. Somebody will know for sure. You can't mix up the flex plates and front crank balancers.
Is this when the engine is under load or just sitting, parked?
I'd look through the ign system, especially plugs, which can miss only at certain rpm's sometimes.
My truck shuddered bad under load, and it was a u-joint, and the yoke from the t- case. The worn yoke through me off because I checked the joints first thing and couldn't find any wobble. The joint finally blew, shredding the little u-bolts, and replacing the joint only helped for a week before it blew again. I sent the driveline off to have it balanced, and ordered a new yoke.
My wobbling completely stopped when I replaced the joint, but came back 5 days later because of the yoke

it can be parked or while im driving. im going to say 850 to 1200 rpms is when you feel it. all the plugs wired ignition timming has all been gone through. i have yet to have the drive shaft checked so it is on the list. after that im looking into just replacing it with a crate motor
If it does it parked, it's not the drive shaft, because that doesn't move till the truck does. My .02, check the balancer to make sure the rubber part isn't squishing out or has deteriorated and let the outside ring weight slip.

good idea. i wasent even thinking when i said drive shaft. well i grabbed the balancer of another 460 i have. might install tomorrow and see. cant hurt anything worse. if all else fails ill rebuild it when the body goes to blasting and paint
who put the motor in it you or someone else? if it wasn't you i would pull the inspection cover off the flywheel and see if it has a weight on it. if it is a 78 motor it shouldn't have a weight on it, they were internally balanced. in 79 they went to externally balanced and weighted the flywheel and balancer. if it has hthe wrong flywheel on it, it will shake just off idle and drive you nuts. mine had a 73 460 with a79 flywheel on it ,it finally broke the center out of the flywheel and sounded like a wrist pin went out. i changed the flywheel and it runs smooth as silk.
