this has got to be a common problem

I hope it has a common solution. It is very difficult to put gas in my truck without spilling a bunch on the ground. There is some kind of design flaw with the filler neck as far as i'm concerned. How does everyone handle this problem? I wish my truck had the tank behind the seat.

Hose for the filler is kinked, and / or restricted.

I'm gonna go ahead and say no, it's not kinked or restricted bec. mine does the same the same thing, i have to logde the pump nozzle in at an angle to get gas in without it spittin back at me all over the place.

Probably a vent hose problem.

If the vehicle required unleaded gas, I have seen cases where the restriction for the unleaded hose was punched out and left down in the filler neck. Don't ask me how I know this???

It must be a 76 or earlier truck. Its normal. Back in the old days the pump nozzel had a differnt design so it was longer and fit better in the non-fuel door type truck beds. When they switched to unleaded gas they changed the nozzel design to make it easier to distinguish the difference between leaded and unleaded. A common trick to making it easier to fill up is to hold the nozzel upside-down when you are filling up. Or just go real slow. The only other option is to get the 77-79 fuel filler setup.

NO you don't! It's just as bad! the best way to do it is to flip the nozzel upside down. going slow is a pain. and the biggest thing to remember is never go to full serve! they just love to spill the gas all over the place!

Haven't tried it yet, but maybe attaching a length of hose (a foot or so?) to the end of the nozzle before inserting would help. Whadda 'ya think?

That is suggested in some of those threads.

You should see the looks on some pump jockeys faces when one does that

When these trucks were new, the vent hose was taped to the filler hose in three places.

When replacement filler hoses were purchased at Ford parts counters, the vent hose came taped to the filler hose.

If your present vent hose isn't taped to the filler hose, or if the vent hose was replaced by a smaller diameter from the original, or if the replacement vent hose is too long, it will either collapse, or pinch.
This not only causes a slooooower fill up, but can lead to fuel spurting back out of the neck, and in some cases, you may only be able to get a few gallons into the tank.

I think I have the vent hose problem. Even going slow when it gets to the top of the tank and the pump clicks off, a splash of gas comes out. Every time.

My 73 F100 used to do the same thing. I replaced the filler hose and vent hose and that seems to have solved the problem. I've never completely filled the gas tank, so I don't know what would happen if I tried to. I usually keep less than a quarter of a tank of gas in it because I rarely drive it.
