Hi everyone. New to this forum. Got an old 87 F 150 supercab XLT, that used to be nice, given to me a while back. Needs a lot of work, but other wise not too bad of a truck. Changed out my water pump today, (half of the bolts were loose, LOL) and noticed the balancer was loose. It's been making noise for a while. All that's left is the metal ring around the crankshaft. What do I need to do this to tighten it down, or should I just remove it?
You'll need a puller to get it off, but that balancers very important in engine life. Dissipates engine vibration to save your bearings from getting roasted.
Thanks Scan, I printed up your instructions. This poor truck must have been worked on by a couple of redneck goobers. Half the bolts holding the power steering and a/c were loose. Supposedly the main seals were replaced, and they left the balancer like that. I also had to replace all the lug bolts. they were loose and driven that way forever. I may need to replace some rims as well. Soon after I get the truck, I was investigating why the tranny wouldn't shift out of 2nd (auto OD) I found the throttle cable had been disconnected. I've been tossing around whether to keep it and fix er up as it is a nice truck once I get thru some of the problems it has. The body is straight, runs straight and true. Nice interior but a little worn. Comfy captains chairs. No rust but the paint is burnt (typical for the south), Eddie Baur colors. Fix the power windows, wiper motor, and install a cool stereo, I'd be good to go.
