Im putting my 460 back together - after being apart for a few months...I forgot which way the oil pump shaft goes in
Im thinking the little "umbrella" on the shaft keeps it from falling thru when the engine is on an engine stand and upside down and keeps it from being pulled out with the distributer when right side up
so - am I correct that the "umbrella" goes toward the distributer - NOT the oil pump?
I feel stupid asking - but I SURE dont want to make a mistake and have to tear into it to fix -
also what direction do I turn the shaft to prime the engine before initial start up??? clockwise or ccw ?
There have been lots of posts where guys have put the shaft in with the umbrella up. It will then follow the distributer out and then fall back into the sump. Major headache.
When done properly it's trapped in position between the pump and the block and can't get lost.
Turn the shaft CCW as viewed from above to prime your oil system. Tape a 5/16 socket to an extension to be sure you don't lose it in the sump.
thanks all - just didnt want to screw up - you all added a comfort level
one follow up question - is there a gasket between the oil pump and the block? - there wasnt when I took it apart - but I think someone was into this engine before....
I prefer to not use one, they do make a gasket for it and most gasket kits have it but I never use one as I feel it's part of what causes the pumps to crack occasionally. If you are at all in question of the surface I use a little anaerobic sealer but never the gasket
