The engine transplant in the '60 gets underway. I found a 292 plus a 4sp trans out of a 58 truck this week. Go get it Friday and will start rebuilding it. These engines must be in short supply down here, as I had a heck of a time finding one.
congratulations on finding your y-block. we started looking for a decent flathead last spring and just got one this month. it's worth the weight. dick r.
sandhill mike-----That is a great catch!! I know of a yblock and trans at a hot-rod shop in down-town Ocala----it was 600 bucks----toooo rich for me.
I need another 272 myself. The 1 I got from a 56 wrecker was locked up tight!! I want to clean 1 and run it and they are great engines although I found out don't oil the rockers well----at least some!!! Bill
SHM congtats on the y block find. They are plentifull here as I have 8 of them right now. 4 of them ran when pulled. I race a y block 56 and they are alot of fun!
I`ve heard that most of the problem with getting oil to the rocker arms comes from a cam bearing turning and blocking of the hole for the oil to come thru to the rockers.
Anyone know more about this?
Yeah, I'm looking forward to the swap. The 223 runs fine, but this is the first step in a complete make over of the truck. I already have a 3 duece setup ready to go on it, just need to find the carb linkage. I'll probably start tearing it down and take it to the machine shop next week.
Fomoco1, That is an old tale about the cam bearing moving. The problem is in the design of the oil passage from the block to the head. The oil has to actually go down and then back up again, and oil cooked in the down hill part and eventually plugs this part of the oil gallery.
Thanks for clearing that up Kevin. I`ve never had to do any work on the Y-Blocks as I`ve never had this problem. I have seen a few conversions for rocker arm oiling installed years back.
Is there any way of cleaning this passage with out a major tear down?
