Well just recently ive had the dreaded misfire on cylinder #4, and like everyone else the first thing I do is replace the spark plugs and plug wires. But as I get around to replacing everything and I get to cylinder #4 and there is a BUNCH of OIL on the spark plug. With out thinking I replaced everything and fired up the car and Im still getting the misfire and check engine light. And im thinking the problem is probably OIL that was on the Spark Plugs, what could it be? I know it could be a sign for the piston rings to fail but does anybody have any other idea?
better check those vacuum hoses around that area
i had a very large leak that actually dripped oil
easy to replace the tubes cause it comes in an assembly
but your plug and cop is prob toast
I looked at all the pcv tube that goes into the vavle cover and all the surrounding vaccum lines but im not seeing any leaks. I also tightened all the new plugs back up to make sure that i torqued everything down together but still get a check engine light. I got it checked @ a different place and now im getting a missfire on # 4 and 7, and an oxygen sensor error, and it says system is running lean. Can a o2 sensor cause missfire or should i try playing with the plug wires a bit?
Check the PCV hose at the back of the throttle body. It tends to crack at the elbow. Might be the cause of your O2 lean code. The misfires might be the COP or could be a bad boot that is grounding out. Check the boot carefully for breaks in the rubber that can allow a ground or moisture in. Boot kits cost about $4-6. You can swap COPs around to see if the misfire code "follows" the COP. If it does, then COP is likely bad. Otherwise, you can check the COP primary and secondary with an Ohmmeter. I think the Haynes manual has the test procedure and the specs.
my expy is a 98 and it has individual coil packs for each cylinder, and sorry for the noob question but does COP stand for coil packs? And the boot is what again?

Cop stands for Coil over plug and the boot is what connects directly to the spark plug.
Did you figure out what the problem was yet? I just started getting the check engine light this morning. The engine started shuttering a bit and then the light came on. I thought maybe my O2 sensor was having an issue so I checked it (physically it's OK, haven't ran it through a tester yet). The only thing that happened in the last few days is a ton of ran yesterday - any chance there's water in there fouling things up??
