"Restore" type products?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-May-02 AT 10:10 PM (EST)]We have a '81 that uses oil, etc. How well do those liquid engine "rebuild" products work? Not looking for a permanent fix, just some help. Whoof, Dog

"Restore" type products?

Well my experience was with a 'bad' engine, as in a poorly designed engine, as opposed to a long-runner like a Ford straight six, but here's what I think. After the initial break-in period (200 miles?) it really does help seal the cylinder walls a little. The effects will pretty much disappear a short while after each oil change, so then you have to add another bottle.

Personally I believe the Restore stuff is for engines on their last legs where 3000 or 6000 miles more is all that is expected of them. Since I had a bearing going out after the third oil change, I feel it may help clog some oil passages, but that's pretty unscientific. Since the straight six is large (essentially the size of a V-8), I'd use the V-8 sized bottle for your engine.

Best,

However, It will not repair broken rings, seal burn't valves or repair spun or worn bearings.
