I just bought a 1967 F100 that was sitting in a collection for the last 5 years. It is originally a frame off restoration done some years ago in SoCal. The paint doesn't have a clear coat and still looks good from about 10 feet. Up close it looks like it should probably be buffed before waxing it.
Should I pay to have it buffed or just use a cleaner wax tyoe of product?
1st wipe the paint down with 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol & water....this will typically remove 90%+ of any surface contamination that may be dulling the paint (visually).
IIRR, you decided to purchase the Profection....it has a high enough level of polish that should bring it up to a nice shine.
If not I would recommend the P-31 #1 POLISH. 3m also makes 3M Perfect-It Ultrafine Machine Polish...but I think it would work fine by hand for you application as well.
Thanks...I just started polishing the old American Racing aluminum wheels using Mother's aluminum polish. It doesn't take too much effort and they brighten up quite a bit. I think I am just removing some oxidation. There is a bit of very fine pitting that will just have to stay. The paint will need a polish to help remove some imperfections. I am willing to do it by hand, but otherwise I would pay a professional because I would probably mess it up with a a machine.
I just finished hand buffing the oxidation off of the mags but they still have some light pitting, but they shined up nice. They will be getting new tires tomorrow.
Tonight I am going to try some hand polishing to the paint with some Meguiar's or Mother's (forgot which one I bought) hand polish compound. I didn't want to order the special one you mentioned and this is what I could get locally.

Understood!!!!!!! Can't wait to see the pics when you are done!
Yesterday I spent sometime polishing the green paint. I got through about half of the truck. There isn't enough difference to show up in a picture but it did clean up th epaint and make it a richer more uniform color.
I think I figured out what the tan dried up drips are on the paint...pine tar. I was able to scratch it off with my finger nail and then buff the area with the polish. It was pretty hard to ge off my hands later, that's when I first thought it was pine tar.
Once I get it all rubbed out, I'll put a couple coats of the Profection on it and put up a pcture then...just don't hold your breath waiting, I have a lot of other mechanical things to get done first. I don't think shiny paint should come first.

FYI 3M makes an adhesive remover which dissolves hardened sap, etc. without harming the paint! typically found at auto paint suppliers and hardware stores! Wear gloves and be in a open well vented space!!!!
