New to forum and have a question about a fluttering sound when I am pulling up hill It starts at about 1800 RPM & seems to quit at about 2200 My truck is 2002 F350 Dually 7.3 I have a AFE air box 4" exuast & a super chip in the haul safe mode. There doesn't seem to be any loss of power just the flutter which gets louder at the lower rpms. Hope some one can help. also its a 6 speed

welcome to FTE is the exhaust and air intake new to you??? it sounds like the turbo wheel spinning in the exhaust..its normale with bigger exhaust...
its like a chirping or sputtering sound & only happens under load and between 1800 &2200rpm If I drop down into 5th gear the rpm goes up the sound goes away
a chirping or sputtering sound is surge..a flutter is when the wheel spins slow with the eaxhaust passing by the fins,,, are you pulling heavy when this happens??
Does it sound like this: http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=25015 35
The red mustang, only my fluttering/chirping is much faster. It only does it as the truck shifts at the top of the RPM range when I'm hammering the throttle. It doesn't happen any other RPM range.

Ooo, good call. I didn't notice if it was under load or not before I spouted off.
Its louder when pulling but still does it when I am pulling my empty gooseneck. Empty the trailer is still about 7000 lbs &when I am loaded it is about 22000 lbs

This link explains the details of what you're hearing, and why the noise goes away when you downshift...
Yep -- definitley classic description of surge. I used to get it badly with the stock late-style compressor wheel, but now I don't hear it at all with the WW (also known as the early-style wheel). Another fix is the ATS housing, but that will run you about $400 or so. The WW is ~$75 +/- depending where you get it from. It has been said the the ATS housing is a better fix, but for me the WW did the job nicely.
What Izzy said for me as well. And the WW sounds better too. Nice turbo whistle vs that "vacuum cleaner on steroids" sound that the factory wheel makes.
