'93 F150 XLT, 4.9 5 speed, 4x2. 312,000 miles. I have used Castrol pure synthetic oil for 200,000 + miles and this winter, the oil pan rusted through. Since I had the pan off, I changed the oil pump. After repair, I filled it with Pennzoil 10w30 since the truck is no longer used for work. Everything was fine for 4 miles then I lost all oil pressure and the engine started knocking. After towing it home, I changed the filter (It was filled with black oil typical of the Castrol) and I had pressure again for about 10 minutes, then nothing. After changing the filter again, I have nothing but a knocking engine. Filters are Fram.
Does anybody have any ideas what my problem is? I don't want to change the pump if it isn't the problem because it is such a job.
The truck has a great body and is sound but this has me baffled. Should I change the pump, get a junk yard engine, what would you do???
The truck has a value of $1800 and a remanufactured engine ia about $1500 so that is out of the question.
Thanks for your help in advance, and may yer Ford be as good as this one has been!
first of all loose the fram filter. go with the motorcraft.
about your pressure problem, you might want to try a new oil sending unit. But if you say that the engine is knocking, then it is already too late. an engine knock is like a water leak. it will never improve and will always get worse. sounds liike a rebuild is in order.
the knock is a sure indicator that the crank will have to be ground. there is also a good chance that the cylinders will have to be bored.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it looks like a rebuild is in order.
