Oil Pressure

I have a 95 F-150 with 150,000 miles that recently lost oil pressure. As it was losing oil pressure, the gauge was fluctuating. The gauge has fluctuated some what over the past several years but it always was in the normal range. I had a new oil pump, pick-up tube and strainer installed. Since I got it back, the oil pressure fluctuated a lot. I changed the oil with Castrol and put a FL-1A filter and it has stopped. Does anyone know what the problem was and is it fixed?

First this would be a post to place in the F-series forum or engine specific or the oil forum. BUT.... I have seen posts that specify problems with Fram filters causing oiling problems. It seems that switching to Motorcraft or Wix usually solves the problem which seems to be in the anti-drain back valve. Also it sounds like Fram has a problem in the materials used. In another note I read in a bike mag where a GL1500 Honda owner used a different brand filter on his bike which had the element glued in. Seems the glue let loose in the hot oil and flowed into the tiny oil passages and set up. Next morning on start up...no more motor.
Basically it sounds as if the filter you were using caused a flow problem possibly with the bypass valve hanging up or the media prematurely plugging or possibly collasping. It is well worth buying Motorcraft or Wix and having peace of mind.

Good news

It could be the filter. Or, I experienced the same exact problem on a '97 F-150. It was the sensor (it costs $15). There is a post somewhere on this site about electrical specs which I couldn't find. The sensor is located next to the filter and is an easy change to a new one. Change the oil and filter at the same time. It may cure your problem.

The problem is actually an electrical one, unless you're talking about a mechanical gauge that you installed yourself.

The stock oil pressure gauge isn't a gauge. It's an idiot light that reads somewhere in between high and low based on a resistor soldered in behind the gauge. If they pressure is above 8 lbs or so, it reads normal.

If the gauge is moving around on you, you have a loose connection between the sending unit and the gauge.

It can't be a coincidence that my oil pump when out, then my gauge. I have installed a new sending unit. If it where sludge, wouls the gauge jump around like that?
