No oil pressure & light on; rattling noise
Hi guys,
I have a 2001 Ford F150 4.6 liter V8 Super Crew.
I use Castrol full synthetic oil and Fram filters...changing oil about every 10,000-12,000 miles and change filter at half way point.
Here is my issue:
I noticed a slight rattle on passenger side of engine a few weeks ago but engine ran well & I wasn't sure if it may be a pulley from AC compressor or something else. It wasn't bad at all...more like a ticking sound.
Yesterday I drove to work with no problem and when I got ready to leave 9 hrs later, I noticed rattling was getting worse. I ran about 2 or 3 miles down the road and my oil pressure flatlined and light came on. This is the 1st time it has ever happened. By this time the rattling sounded bad, almost like it broke something on both sides of engine around valve cover area.
I pulled over immediately and had truck towed to shop down the road from my house, When my mechanic started it up this morning it had oil pressure and rattling was not near as bad. I put a new oil filter on it & topped off oil. He could not get to it today so I drove it home today for the weekend and by the time I got home (3 miles) it did same thing...flatline, oil pressure light on and rattling with no power (very sluggish). I did notice the oil pressure light came off & on and gauge went up and down a couple of times before I shut it down.
Any idea what the problem is? Oil pump maybe? I just didn't think oil pumps usually fail.

First question is with such indications why are you pushing to do major damage to the motor before you find out the problem, by continuing to drive it?
First thing is to put a real pressure gauge on and see if there is oil pressure at idle.
Obviously no oil pressure is going to cause noises. Cam chains, bearings banging and seizing the pistons in the cylinders (sluggishness).
If the noises are in the front, I suspect the cam chain tensioners have worn the guides off and parts are laying in the oil pan and may be blocking the oil pickup after a short time driving.
If this is the case, the front of the motor has to be opened up to replace parts and better hope the bearings and rings and cylinder walls are still ok.
.
Next, you did not do the motor a favor using the oil and filter you used.
I hope you at least used 5w20 weight oil. Should have used the Motorcraft 5w20 and 820s filter.
Notice I am giving you a little bit of h*ll over all this.
My 2002 is going for 214,000 miles with a perfect motor yet on 5w20 Motorcraft blend and the 820s filter the factory spec oil and filter..
The body will fall apart before the motor gives up.
Good luck in any event.

I can't tell you how much time or money. The shop the does the work will have that answer.
The radiator, fan, crank pulley has to come off to get at the front cover.
At the crank is the oil pump. Behind the front cover is the cam chain tensioners.
The chain tensioners are operated from oil pressure. This ought to be a hint about the noise.
If you used heavy weight oil all this time, it likely added to the wear on the tensioners causing early failure if you find them worn so bad they fell apart.
Labor time/rate, parts, coolant and gaskets is the cost basis.
Good luck.

Fram filters are junk. You prob had a piece of glue that holds the cardboard end caps to the paper media break loose and get lodged in the oil orifice in the cylinder head. Then the low pressure to that head scored the cam journals and made the chain eat into the guide causing aluminum shavings to clog the oil pickup. I wouldn't put a fram on my lawnmower. The orifice is made into the rear cam cap on the right and the front cap on the left. I would take the filter off and cut it open and see if there is any metal in it. Then strain some of the oil through a coffee filter to see if there is any metal in the oil. Pull both valve covers and a few cam caps to check the condition of the cams and heads. Hopefully not much damage has been done.

And by the way the oil pressure going off then back on is a sure sign of a spun main bearing, the reason is that went the main bearing rolls around again the oil hole is opened back up again and then when the bearing spins is blocks oil again. that's the reason you get fluxuating on and off oil pressure.
