How's about a 429?

So I was flipping through the pages of the local for-sale ads and found a guy selling a 429ci engine for less than $500. It sparked my interest...

Unfortunately I doubt it'll happen but it really would be cool to have a 429 in one of these trucks.

It stinks because I could make it happen and get it in there. I could run it carburated or injected, get 460 motor mounts and a 460 5spd.

But I already have a lot of 393ci stroker parts. Only problem is it'll still cost me a lot to build it right. My pistons and rods are ok but the crank will probably need minor work. My block will need to be re-honed and some minor machine work to the tune of $500+. I'll need all new bearings, valvetrain, and $1500+ heads. I'll need to make headers for it and adjust my exhaust. I'll need a new intake, injectors, throttle body, and many misc parts.

It'll cost me over $3000 to finish off my 393 and than I'll still need $2000 for a new transmission. I'll also need about $1000 for rebuilding my 10.25 1 ton rear axle to handle that 500hp beast.

It doesn't take long for a boat load of parts to cost $6000 or more.

But I've gotta have a decently powerful engine. What will probably happen is that I will not do a 393 for awhile and do a mild 351. I have a lot of 351 parts that could be put onto a lower mileage 351 and make 300 or more horsepower without costing too much (less than a grand).

But how about selling the 393 stuff and getting a 429? Still would be really cool.

can you pick up the 429, and just sit on it until your ready to build? I know it's cash off your stroker, but is a 429.

There is no replacement for displacement! go for the 429, put a real motor in your truck. If you have not had the pleasure of a big block you need to treat yourself.

Can ya tell I'm partial to big blocks?

I say get the 429!! Heck if the crank is no good swap in one from a 460, and pistons, and you have the lowest buck stroker[eaven uses your same 429 rods!] Or a nice 514, or 521 kit would be nice......

Yea I think I'd have to buy it too.

That is if its complete and runs good, with good oil pressure ready to go.

Be nice to have around, just in case....

The 429/460 blocks are essentially the same, with different strokes i believe, the 429 being a shorter stroke.

Why not start off with a 460, and build from there? You can stroke it with aftermarket kits to 551cid without block clearancing meaning that the machine work isn't terribly awful.

Add turbos for even more "fun".

Like a project I participated in recently:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/666051-go-wild.html

While my buddy used flatlander, blue thunder, scat and other "high end" parts one doesn't have to go this wild. You probably don't need 1200+ HP in a pickup.

As you know I'm (slowly) building the junkyard equivalent to what my friend put together, which will produce less power than his project, but at the same time significantly more than most engine builds. Cheap too!

There's no replacement for displacement. Especially with 30+lbs of boost

I'll bet he would be happier if he still had it, that car is worth a HUGE pile of money. I would love to just find an engine somewhere, but the last time I seriously searched the heads (needing to get rebuilt) were going upwards of $25K.

Anyway I got off track, like I stated earlier I get carried away about they big blocks.

If you are going to bore and stroke you might as well go out to 640 and put a 8-71 with injection on it, I know that combo will get upwards of 2500HP. Not very efficient though one pass to the end of a stadium over a couple cars and back uses about 6 gallons.

It would be a LOT less work to drop a 460 in place. Put a few go-fast goodies on it, and you can be over 500hp without a lot of effort.

How would you manage to get a fuel injected 429 working?

it would be cool but the 460 truck engine's have better bottom ends the 429 was never a truck motor plus you really need to know what engines had the right casting numbers to know if they had the tougher rods and cranks I did a lot of research a few years back and these are the things that were passed on to me
