If memory serves, isn't WIN98 SE required to support wireless?

Also, the ORIGINAL version of XP supports wireless with WEP; it just may not support WPA without SP2. WEP & WPA are encryption standards for wireless security.

My recommendation is to get it working with the bare minimum of security and then slowly add security setttings one at a time. Also, change the SSID immedately.

I dumped the Win98 machine and am now trying with tow XP machines and, as still it did not install (see post #13)

I would be happy just to get it working at all! I have no house near mine and no visitors much, so security is not much of an issue.

Seems like a router and card should work with XP even with sp2?

If they were trying to get rid of me, I must say it worked...LOL

Should Linksys stuff be less frustrating?
Linksys are easy to setup, but if you have a virus/spyware that is interfering it might not work with any vendor..

Also did you install the software before installing the card?

If you still have it installed look in device manager to see if there are any errors..

Try uninstalling from device manager by clicking on it then hit the delete button. This will remove it from device manager but not uninstall the software.

Then under the action menu select scan for new hardware.. Maybe the card didn't install correctly.

Do you have a wired network card in either of the 2 PC's?

If so, try the following:
1. Ensure your PC's ethernet card adapter's TCP/IP properties are set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically"
2. Unplug wireless router & cable modem from wall outlet
3. Run a cat 5 cable from cable modem to WAN port of the router
4. Plug another cat 5 cable from port 1 on router to ethernet port on your pc
5. Plug in cable modem and router into wall outlet (and turn on if applicable)
6. Wait a few minutes and start computer.

Assuming the router is still set to DHCP is should assign the PC an IP address and you can get to the internet.

You may need to get into the router's web based utility. You need to be connected via hard wire for this to happen initially.

Wireless configuration shoud be similar. Biggest thing you need to do is to assign the SSID to the wireless adapter so that it can "find" the access point/wireless router.

Hope this helps. If you have never power-cycled the modem down, that alone may just do the trick. If the cable modem has the MAC address of your PC stored in it the router will never work. You need to power cycle down the modem so that it can store the MAC address of the router instead of your original PC.

I do have e-net cards in one, likely both, as I run a cable modem in thru one.

Im returning the Netgear stuff today and will go for the Linksys setup.

What is a SSID and do I have to set that up manually, or can the software make that happen withoput my having to figure out all this stuff?

SSID is the unique identifier for a access point. If you are changing to Linksys, I think they now have a CD that assists you with the configuration.

Just remember to powercycle the cable modem for 3 or 4 minutes prior to powering up the first time.

Linksys is now owned by Cisco, so they have a pretty good name behind them now.

OK, I could use a bit more info here..

I am looking at :Linksys® Wireless 802.11G Broadband Router

I read over the Used Guide (PDF)

http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/uc/rs...3175_PM_EN.pdf

It has like 20 pages of complex settings..

Can someone look at this user guide and tell me what I need to do just to get up and running with a cable modem connection??? It seems like Pages 17 - 37 are all advanced stuff that I can not deal with?

Id appreciate knowing before I go buy something I have little chance of ever successfully installing...

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

It should wotk right out of the box with no special settings.

However after you get it connected you need to change the password and setup the wireless security if you want it.. You said that no one was close to you so you probably can skip the wireless security, but I would set it up anyway.. Just use 64 bit WEP security just to have something..

What internet service do you have Cable or DSL?

DSL usually requires a username and password setup, cable just connects as long as the modem has been reset as stated above by unplugging it..

Remember if you also have phone through cable you will need to pull the battery also..

Way to go man. Glad to hear you have it up and running. Sorry I was gone thru you previse ordeal.
I reckon when you setup your linky you now see how to setup your ssid? You can change the profile at any time. You can use explorer to connect to your router and change setting also.

Just be ware that anyone with a wireless card within 300 feet or so of you will be able to use your connection and the only clue you have will be a slightly slower data rate. And anyone that knows how to hack will be able to exploit your computers. There is hardware out there that encrypts the signal between computers you want to have access but it cost a lot more then the cheap open to everyone stuff.

He can assign the garage unit its own IP address for the router and the XP Unit will give it permission to be accessed..all others will be blocked.

Just a note here. I have not seen mention, that if you set up a wireless network, you should/must make it secure. If you do not secure your network, other folks with wireless capabilty, might "listen" in to your network, and thus steal your idenity, credit, etc.

I do not have the procedure to do this handy. But if you can start a computer, the procedure is easy. I think linksys web site has instructions. Other wise ask you local computer guru.

I am fore warning you... an unsecure wireless network, is trouble waiting to happen!
