351M Timing Pointer ????

Where is the timing pointer suppose to be located on the 351M? Mine was missing when I bought the truck so I don't know what I need to be looking for in the way of a new one.

Thanks,

James

i can try to get a pic to you tomorrow..it's located on the passenger side of the pulley/balancer using bolts towards the bottom of the water pump. I think it uses bolts that secure the water pump to the block...pretty sure.

Looks to me like it bolts to the passenger side of the engines front cover plate.

Since the OP didn't list the information regarding the year and model the pointer is needed for (profile sez 1974 Bronco which didn't come with a 351M), I can't even begin to post the part numbers.

NOTE: Numbers: There are 5 different pointers used, it depends on the year, where the vehicle the engine is from was sold new, whether it had or has EEC, with or without A/C. Install the wrong pointer, what will be the result? Timing off.

D3AZ-6023-A .. Timing Pointer ~ Fits all of the following except CA: 351C 2/4V = 1973/74 Ford passenger cars / 351M/400 = All FoMoCo passenger cars 1975/79 / 1977/82 F100/350's / 1978/82 Bronco's / 1980/82 Econolines.

D7AZ-6023-B .. Timing Pointer ~ 1977/82 351M/400 Cars & Trucks = CA only.

Both the above p/n's are obsolete.

How do you tell if a vehicle was sold new in CA?

Look on the Rating Plate for the DSO code.

If the code is 71 or 72 = the Ford vehicle was sold new in CA.

Lincoln/Mercury CA DSO code: 52.

351C Timing Pointer

Sir,
I'm trying to find and catalog for a '70-71 351C block, D0AE-L ("M"-code, "1E11" date code):

1. Correct Timing Pointer
2. Front sump oil pickup (stock)

Your help will be appreciated!
