Transmission Identification

Hey all:

I have a 77 ford truck with a 351m in it. The engine is great but the 4 speed manual tranny is leaking pretty good. I need to know two things:

1). Is it easier to get an automatic replacement that would bolt right up?

2). How do I identify which tranny is in my truck now so I can look at my rebuild options.

are you sure its the tranny not the engine?

It'd probably be a lot easier just to fix the leak, but you're not very specific as to where it's leaking from.

I"m sure it's the tranny because the engine is clean. The only tag I found was on the right side of the tranny. It has a steel plate that read
"The Heil Company" with the following code 253a522

I will run some die through the engine but it appears to be from the front part of the transmission right by where the bell housing connects to the front of the tranny.

Is your transmission low on oil, or making any noises? Does the oil its leaking feel and smell like motor oil, or stank **** fish smelling stuff? Check the oil level of the trans, if it is full, I doubt it is leaking.
