Changing intake on 240??

First of all I want to say... I am no machanic by no means so don't laugh at my questions.

I would like to change my factory 1barrell intake on a 240 to a 4 barrell. This vehicle will be a regular street vehicle (no racing). but I do want more power than it has now.

My question is... what all do I need to do this modification? I looked on cliffords site for the intake and it says (water Heated) and it recommends there headers. Do I need to add a water line to the intake or what? and what type of cam and carb do I need?

Thanks

Changing intake on 240??

You can splice inline into your line going to the heater for the manifold. The late model 300's (EFI) use dual cast exhaust manifolds. If you're serious enough to get into cam work..here's what I would do, stroke that 240 to get a full 300 cubic inches. Swap the crank, rods, and pistons - keep the 240 head to keep the compression rather high. Most guys mention going with a 270 duration cam on a 300, not sure on a 240. If interested, I have a fresh 300 nodular iron crank reground with the bearings for sale.

Changing intake on 240??

I got a guy that is going to rebuild my 240 next week and I told him I wanted to go with a four barrell. I looked at the cliiford intakes and headers and I was wondering is it really worth all that money.... YES I think so what Ya'll think. He told me to see what size cam they recommend with the 4 barrell and headers. So I guess I will be calling them this week. huh?

Do you guys think I'm doing the right thing? Any suggestions on what I need. Let me know before the end of next week.

66FORDKUSTOM... Do you have any pictures of the motor? I would like to see how it is before I get my rebuilt. What kind of Carb do you have on yours? I can't find the Offenhousers website do you know what there address is?

Thanks

Changing intake on 240??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 00:19 AM (EST)]Do yourself a favor and skip over Clifford. Go to PAW or Jegs or Summit and get an offenhauser intake (DP or C-series), a 390cfm Holley 4bbl and a cam. From simulated dyno tests on Desktop Dyno 2000, the Crane 268 cam is a nice cam that will give you a decent amount of power. The EFI manifolds or headers, either way. Headers will add more than the manifolds, but cost more.

Going to a 300 instead of the 240 will give more power though. A 240 is good for a cheap buildup of a drag motor because it'll safely hit higher rpm's than the 300 (assuming the same price spend on parts). But because you said street, you may as well swap to a 300 crank/rods/pistons.

{EDIT} For the water heating, you will still have to go to Cliffys and get the water heated spacer. I'm going to attempt a non-water-heated setup for now and see how that runs, then if need be purchase the headed spacer...

Changing intake on 240??

A lot depends on what you really want from your truck. Do you want a weekend vehicle to haul your boat or 4X, do you want to soup up your daily driver to get up to 65 real fast, or do you want to maximize fuel economy? Offenhauser manufactures some nice intakes (two types)as well as Clifford. You can find Hedman hedders at PAW also. The running opinion here at FTE and Fordsix is that Clifford is not bad, but quite pricey. You can find a nice Crane cam equivalent to what Clifford offers. The recurring theme here is how much $$ are you willing to spend. For example, you can buy the Cliffy intake with the built in water jacket for $280 + another $40 for the four barrel adapter = ~320 less shipping or a Offy C series for $180 + another $40 for a coolant heated four barrel adapter = $220. I was lucky and just picked up the clifford intake with the water heated intake + adapter plate for $176 on Ebay...sorry to say that the clifford intake has the cast sandy surface in the interior of the runners :-( . I'm still writing up my BOM for my build up, but personally, I'd save where I could to do other mods like (in your case) scraping the points and putting in a DII distributer along with a MSD box & coil. I still say while you have the LB in the shop, stroke it to 300 and have the fun of 3/4 of a stroked 351

Changing intake on 240??

Where is PAW and what is it? I will trust you guys and take your word and go with that. Like I said in my first post I am no machanic. And now ya'll are throwing more options out for me.

Correct me if I'm wrong on what I should tell the man who is going to rebuild my 240.

I will go to the MAN and say.... I would like to stroke this 240 to a 300.

He should know what I mean right? He told me to get the intake, manifold (header), carb and the size of cam and he would take care of building it.

So what I need is for you guys to point me to a place where I can get the carb, intake, and headers and possibly the cam.

Thanks

Changing intake on 240??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 08:53 AM (EST)]PAW is Performance Automotive Warehouse. http://www.pawinc.com/ If you look in a performance magazine, most likely they have a 2-page ad in there.

Call them up and tell them that you are building a performance 300 and ask about the Holley 390cfm 4bbl carb, a C-Series single plane Offenhauser intake, and ask them about what headers they carry. As for a cam, if you're looking for a boatload of torque, the Comp (I know I said Crane before, I got mixed up) Cams #66-248-4.

Just tell your engine builder that you want it stroked to a 300 and he shouldn't have any problems. The 300 is such a common motor there shouldn't be an issue (and the blocks are the same, only some of the external accessories were different from the factory).

This is just my opinion, but others may have a different view.

-=Whittey=-

{EDIT} SummitRacing and Jegs both should have these items as well for a similar price.

Changing intake on 240??

Thanks Whitty and others but....

I am sorry to say that the machanic talked me into a 302 which is what I wanted to do down the road someday. He said if I was to rebuild the 240 and then switch out later I would be just waisting my money. What I am really after is POWER and a good sounding truck.

Sorry for waisting ya'lls time but I did learn alot more from you guys about the conversion.

If any of you guys would like to buy my 240 as is let me know. It up for sale now.

Thanks,
Ronald
